Fandom Things That Disappointed You

[personal profile] nonnymouscawitz 2016-05-24 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Every fandom has The One. The wonderful prolific author, or the Fic To End All Fics that ends up on everyone's rec list. What hyped fanfic/fanart/fans did you walk away from going 'That's it?'

Mine in the comments.

I get a lot of my fanfic recs from TVTropes, which is generally a mixed bag but skews just a bit more towards 'good.' One of the big Harry Potter ones that keeps coming up is the 'Dangerverse', which is lengthy and popular enough to have its own page. It was advertised to me as 'how to write OCs/Marauders raised Harry fic and have it be good.'

I don't get it. I mean, it has some pretty good moments, but it's basically cliche after cliche. The children are adorable and precocious, every single one of them, there are New Powers As The Plot Demands, Pop culture references abound with no real reason, character relationships are always tied up neatly, the characters have almost zero flaws (and the flaws they do have are minor at best and easily 'fixed') and it's just nonstop Mary Sue parade, even with the canon characters. I'm on book 5 now because there are still a lot of bits I like, but I have no idea why everyone thinks this is the be-all end-all of fic.

Your problem is that you're getting your fanfic recs from TVTropes. Anyone can get a fic rec on TVTropes if you suck up to the mods enough.

I had the same experience w/ Dangerverse back when I first found it (c. 2010).

I was a huge Remus/Tonks shipper in the Harry Potter fandom, so the last book really disappointed me.

Actually, the writing was so choppy I didn't even care that much when they got killed off until I absorbed it the next day. I was that sick of their drama in DH.

(I didn't actually mind it in the sixth book. I thought it made sense, which is an unpopular opinion...)

I was young enough (Only 14) that I adored all of the last book, and I wasn't quite at the point where character death in something I liked did more than make me go 'Oh, that guy I like is dead. How sad.' and then move on. I also read the book at top speed in less than 24 hours, though, which may have had an impact on how I related to the events that were happening. I've always been a fan of drama, personally, which was why book five was my favorite.

I feel you on this.

I thought it made sense in the sixth book as well but from what we saw of their issues(which wasn't a lot since Harry was the PoV character) it felt like it got sorted out in a way which they could resolve. Then in the last book their relationship got chopped around and generally felt really clunky to me. I was not happy with it. :/

Alternate HIMYM ending

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Not so much fandom, as canon. but I recently found out there was an alternate ending to How I Met Your Mother that didn't shit all over the previous 9 seasons.

Link for anyone that wants to see it. https://youtu.be/RoHUs8J7x94

Still don't like it. Don't like the Barney and Robin divorce. But it is certainly better than what we actually got in canon.

I like this ending better. I will live in the depts of denial and pretend this is what happened.

I could never ever get in to the Draco Trilogy nor figure out why it was so popular.

I completely missed all of that drama, but I've poked around at places that still host it and I've just never had the patience to sit down and try it, or her published works. Though that's largely because instead of owning up to her mistakes and going 'Yeah, I did a lot of shitty things back then and I'm sorry about it, moving on,' she seems to prefer "DON'T TALK ABOUT THE AWFUL THINGS I DID IT NEVER HAPPENED NEVER" and that just sours me on her writing in general.

I briefly liked it because the description made me think it was a Freaky Fridayish parody using HP. (Since Harry and Draco switch bodies and everything.)

... it only later occurred to me that it may have been inspired by the Buffy episode where Buffy and Faith switch bodies. (Not that body switching is that unique, but given CC's reputation...)

I loved it for one simple reason: I had never seen Buffy and didn't realize she'd stolen literally every line I liked.

There used to be a SPN fic that was RIDICULOUSLY popular called "Twist and Shout." Amazing letdown.

Oh god, I haven't seen that fic before but I've seen that exact premise in pretty much any fandom set in modern times with a gay couple. It's getting old, and I hate reading things that are guaranteed to be a nonstop sadfest.

Still not over how badly the Dangerverse ended. The first three fics are still among my favorite, but things started to go off the rails in the fourth. And the ending was just awful.

I'm a bit disappointed that there isn't more Alec/Magnus explicit fic. Hopefully more people seeing the TV show will help (fanfic production greatly picked up after the TV show started).

Also, need more Alec whump. That character and his storyline was made for some physical and emotional whump.

Haven is such a tiny fandom. There is so little fic for it, comparatively speaking. And so much of it is by one utterly terrible author.

The apparently (in the ship fandom) universally revered Children Wake Up series by hollycomb. I kinda hate it.

Me, circa 2013: watches Iron Man for the first time
Me, 5 minutes after finishing Iron Man for the first time: goes on AO3 looking for Tony/Rhodey

I should have predicted it, but man, what a letdown.

This is less a "this exists and I'm disappointed" than a "this doesn't exist and I'm disappointed".

Basically, there's this ship that... one character is shown legitly crushing on another in canon, and there's absolutely no fanfic for it on AO3.
I mean, it's from the second to last major update (the last major one before the ending), and a lot of people didn't like the ending, but no one shipping this at all feels a bit odd. Especially in such a ship-happy fandom.

Stephen Moffat's transgendered Timelords. It has been his wank fetish (in both senses of the word) since the 1980s, he made no secret of it when he was just a fan himself, and was really gross about how he expressed that. I was grateful for most of his run that the BBC refused to let him run with that but when they took that restriction off I was so done. It is no coincidence that ratings figures totally and completely collapsed when he got to do that. That and Danny fucking dumb prick Pink and the really gross and distasteful "tribute" to the Brig, and the new comedy version of UNIT, and his two bi-lesbians in a TARDIS thing with Clara's arc... Ugh. I'd have taken a hundred episodes about the space dragon and moon eggs over any of that shit. I'm done with DW until he is gone.

Also NCIS, I was done with that after the Mexico murders arc which did not lead to Gibbs going to jail.
