Emulators

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone use them? Is it just a matter of downloading an emulator and then the games? Is there a specific website I should use?

I'd like to play some games, but I'm not sure where to start.

It depends on what you're trying to emulate, and what you're trying to emulate them on (PC, tablet, what-have-you). Generally yes, it's just a matter of downloading the emulator and ROM, though keep in mind ROMs you didn't make yourself are illegal, blah blah blah.

I get most of mine from coolroms, because I'm lazy that way, but Nintendo got up their ass and made them take a lot of their Nintendo stuff down. That kind of thing I get from torrents now. What system/game are you trying to do?

I'm looking for Playstation and Snes. There are some old RPGs I'd like to play on my PC.

I don't know how well a Playstation emulator would run (doesn't run well at all for me, but I also have a really shitty computer), but for SNES I recommend ZSNES. It runs fabulously for me, so if your computer is even slightly better than mine, it should run great for you.

ZSNES is a great emulator for crap machines as it's not been updated in 10 years and focuses on speed over accuracy -- which is a double edged sword, as many games don't behave right. I'd recommend it to someone with an ancient PC but for everyone else I'm gonna say SNES9X.

It depends on which type of games. I only know of DOS Box and SCUMM for playing old adventure games.

I use Desmume to run Nintendo DS games on my computer. I only use it for Japanese games that haven't been officially imported, so I search for an English translation and then download the game along with the translation patch.

Gonna tell you now, one of my favorite places to get roms is emuparadise (which younger me used to read as "emu" (the bird) paradise; don't ask lol). They have a ton of different games, including a bunch I wasn't able to find on other sites.

Generally, emulators for older systems tend to work better than newer systems, especially those with 3D graphics. Gameboy line games are usually just "plug and play," but something for Playstation is usually going to take some tinkering with settings first. I HAVE emulated gamecube games before and it took a while for me to make them playable (one was a classic-style fighting game; without tinkering it slowed to a crawl and the character models were missing parts of their framework, so it was like I was playing with Rayman characters).

I have Visual Boy Advance which I use to play Pokemon games. It's been over 10 years since I started playing them though so I honestly don't remember any details about getting it. It's a great emulator though.

Here's everything that'll run on Windows, many will run on other platforms.

DOS: DOSBox will handle most DOS games, and many Gog.com releases include specially configured versions of it.
NES: Nestopia or FCEUX -- comes down to personal preference
SNES: Snes9X
Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance: Visual Boy Advance-M
Master System, Genesis, Game Gear, Sega CD, 32X: KEGA Fusion

At this point things start getting more complicated, with emulators requiring BIOSes and stuff -- do some research, etc.

Playstation: ePSXe, pSX, or PCSX-R -- I use ePSXe but YMMV
Nintendo 64: MUPEN or Project64, the latter is probably the better choice
(I don't have Saturn recommendations as I've never used a Saturn emulator, soz!)
Playstation 2: PCSX2, hands down -- but follow a configuration guide!

You can find roms for just about anything short of PS2 games on emuparadise.me.

I HIGHLY recommend you bring a gamepad with you if you're getting into console or handheld emulation.

----

PS If you're looking to emulate older Macs, Basilisk II is the way to go if you can't get Sheepshaver to work. But I can't think of many reasons why you'd want to do so -- the only reason I even went to the trouble was to play Pathways Into Darkness, which has a free re-release in the Apple store but I don't own a Mac.

Thanks for the Mac advice. I couldn't get Sheepshaver to run Ferazel's Wand.

I couldn't get Sheepshaver to work at all. Maddening, since I wanted to play the CD version of PID. Oh well.

I actually grew up with emulators (and DOS games).

NO$GMB is what I used to use for Pokémon, back on Windows 98 *laughs* Don't think it liked XP once I managed to transfer stuff from the 98 computer, though.
VisualBoyAdvance is what I use instead, now, it supports GBA too. And if you tweak a few settings you can play Pokémon Blue etc in full colour ;)
Got VBA off a kid at high school years ago, tbh. Only issue I've had with it is that the sound seems a bit choppy.

DeSmuME is the main DS emulator I've found. Works well, decent interface, runs most things (at least with the latest version; I remember issues with Gen5 Pokémon on older versions) etc.
Although NO$NDS is an alright alternative (iirc it supports having multiple copies of the game open, for things like trading Pokémon).

Project64 works pretty well for N64 games. Acquired that at high school too :P

I also have:
ePSXe for PS1
Dolphin for Gamecube
Fusion for Sega Genesis
Snes9x for SNES
VirtuaNES for NES

And, of course, DOSBox, so I can emulate the games I used to play natively *laughs*

Haven't gone out of my way to get ROMs/ISOs for years though, so I'm not familiar with which sites to visit nowadays :(
(Used to just Google for them though :P)

Imo controller/gamepad is only really necessary if you grew up playing games mostly on consoles rather than computer. As someone who's most familiar with keyboard controls, I personally don't bother with gamepads (although occasionally I wish I had one, for the sole purpose of analogue sticks).
