Re: Sailor Moon Crystal
(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)As other people have said, Crystal was meant to more closely adapt the manga. Unfortunately, the manga is... not very good in a lot of ways, and REALLY not written in a way that can be directly converted to the screen without it being really awful. The latest season (season 3) is much better afaik (better animation, better writing) but to get there you'd have to sit through seasons 1+2 and I don't think it'd be worth it.
The original anime is definitely slower paced and there is a lot of filler, but imo most of the filler episodes actually DO have some connection to the plot or at least have a lot of really nicely done character development and fun subplots. I would say that in a lot of ways it's the filler that makes the 90s show so good, because it builds on the relatively bland contrived main plot (which is basically all that Crystal is) and instead gives you a slice-of-life show about these different girls. I'm not sure you could safely skip a lot of filler episodes without also skipping lots of really great moments.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 12:02 am (UTC)(link)I agree with this. The monster of the week format can get tiring in places and there's a lot of flimsy plots to go with the MotW but there's also so, so many amazing character moments and developments and just them being friends that I love all of the filler? I really, really prefer the 90s anime. Everyone gets a chance to get known whereas in Crystal they're all cardboard props for the plot, with the exception of Usagi.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal
(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 06:13 am (UTC)(link)I went into it expecting to be bored out of my skull because of the reputation of all the horrible filler eps, but honestly some of my favs so far have been "filler" episodes. It really is more of a slice of life anime with some magical girl adventure thrown in, and it's really REALLY funny at points imo.
Also, I found Usagi waaaaay less annoying in the 90s anime, because her whining fits better thematically with goofy 14-year-old comedy bits and she has a lot more depth. You get to see her actually grow up a bit, from the first eps where she's scared out of her wits to later in the season when she's growing into her role and showing real wisdom and kindness to her friends. It's really clear in the 90s show WHY the senshi are so loyal to her, vs Crystal where she's either crying or a badass and everyone loves her even though we never see why they would.
and everyone is always talking shit about the animation, but it's honestly not that bad? It blows a lot of 90s anime out of the water and it's way smoother and more emotive than Crystal.
I mean, seriously.

Re: Sailor Moon Crystal
I think the talking shit about the animation thing is sort of a modern-era snobbishness, you know? I can't see the first gif, it's saying access denied or something, but I believe you. The animation in Crystal is really stiff and weak. I've seen bits of the original anime, and it honestly looks pretty good to me. Yes it's 90s, but it's PRETTY 90s. I just watched a bit of the original's episode 1 today, and I think because it's a little more cartoony, even Usagi's crying isn't nearly as annoying.
It's like how I watched Utena, and okay, I'd love to see some of those scenes with full-on animation (especially the battles), and maybe a bit less repetition in some parts, but holy hell that's a gorgeous looking show.
