I assume someone is going to figure out a way to blame this on men, but it looks like women are assholes too!

That's an interesting study, but I'm not sure that it justifies the conclusion that "women are just as likely to be assholes to women online". It sounds more like women are just as likely to be assholes to women online when you're specifically talking about beauty and body image. Those are not the same things.

The tweets were not specifically about beauty and body image. They focused specifically on the words 'slut' and 'whore'.

Sorry, I should have italics quoted it to be more clear, but that's what I was talking about there.

I would also say, about the study you're talking about here, that it is interesting but it's also a specific study and no single study should be used to draw an absolute conclusion. And I think that when you're talking about gender on the Internet the more interesting question is going to be patterns of behavior and structures of interaction and what kinds of experience people are subjected to. Obviously neither gender has a monopoly on being assholes.

This is because we exist in a culture where beauty standards are so rigid and ingrained that even the people they negatively impact follow them.

But...all women don't do this. Most women (like most men) are not assholes. I guess they are just less weak that those weak ass women who ARE assholes.

I didn't say anybody was weak, I said our beauty standards are ingrained. The asshole behavior is just because 'it's just the internet!'

I'd honestly be willing to bet the majority of comments criticizing looks are from women, really.

...Less so the rape threats.

Submit proof for majority of comments criticizing looks coming from women or GTFO.

Uh, well, that's exactly what the study above found. To the tune of 80% of said comments.

Yep, because being an asshole isn't gender specific and there's a lot of internalized misogyny out there, and with the anonymity of the internet, yeah.

On the other hand, women are probably less likely to threaten to murder each other's children.

No, they are just more likely to kill children.

Mothers (27.4%) account for the largest percentage of people to kill a child.
Mother and father are at 22%.
Fathers only at 13%.
Mother and someone else is 11%.
Father and someone else is at 1.5%.

The question I have for that study is, whose children are they?
There's a significant difference between "kill my children" and "kill your children", in my opinion. So I'm not sure how relevant that study is to this specific line of conversation.

feotakahari mentioned "each other's" children, implying "not their own".
And I get the feeling that most parents who kill children kill their own kids (or kids they're the primary guardian for), rather than anyone else's. And the amount of time spent with the children is probably a factor (see: mothers being expected to spend more time with their kids than fathers, parents in general spending more time with their kids than other adults do with said kids).

I think everybody has shit they're gonna be assholes about, whether that's beauty standards, politics, veganism, furries, online gaming, religion, whatever. And in aggregate I don't think either gender's more likely to treat other people like shit.

that's such a narrow definition of "asshole" and misses the point completely about what is so insidious about the women-aimed threats that regularly occur online. sure, yes, the number of women calling other women "sluts" is the same as men, but how about the number of rape threats? death threats? doxxing? stalking? revenge porn? come on now...

Dude, death threats and doxxing against women is overwhelmingly done by other women. You can't take two steps on Tumblr without slamming your foot into a "callout" post against some girl, complete with personal information and active attempts to get her life ruined over some perceived slight.

It's called internalized misogyny.

It's a product of our woman hating culture.

The culture that was created and is still managed by the patriarchy.

i.e. Men.
