I kinda think you just have to know how to discuss those things without constantly being dialed up to 10 about it all the time. I mean this is just in my experience, but I think the people who approach those issues productively irl are more likely to have more of a critical but not completely negative presence in fandom while the really intense meta spitting is from people who are trying to win social points in fandom by hating the thing more than the next person.
