I help make apps for them that customers will like so that they'll like the company more so that they'll buy more stuff using our service so that, ultimately, our rate of return will be higher. So my contribution to society, if anything, is that I make it slightly more likely that someone buying entertainment stuff will buy it from our service and not from our competitors. And that's not really the reason that I do make a living: on a high level, I earn my keep because I slightly increase the return of anyone who's invested in our company.
It's one thing to say that society needs people to contribute to it, but my problem with that argument is that, if that's your justification, I don't think our current system is very good at meeting that standard either. Unless you really think that I'm making a profoundly meaningful contribution to society.
