I don't really understand it either, for me to have an actual clear mental image of a book character I usually have to see a piece of fanart (or a movie/tv show based on the book that I think was well cast) and accept that image as my picture of the character. I like it that other people do get those clear mental images though, because it nets me plenty of great, diverse fanart, like anon above said.
