It's why so much of the fanart is so samey. You can't even tell who they're drawing half the time because all their blond or dark-haired elves look the same.

Samey? Silmarillion fanart? Really?

Er, what kind of weird fanart are you seeing? Silm fanart is hands down the most widely varying fanart by a large margin out of all the fandoms I'm in.

Admittedly the onus is on the artists to come up with distinguishing physical traits because Tolkien doesn't give many (the guy with the gold-threaded braids is always Fingon but the other characters don't have descriptions that really jump out) but as soon as you figure out a certain artist's character designs they almost always vary a ton from character to character.

Tbh, my main problem with Silmarillion fanart is that it often takes me two or three looks to figure out if a particular elf is a male or a female.

Okay this comment made me laugh because halfway through reading it I was like "and the redhead is always Maedhros....oh wait, except when it's his mom who he's often identical to." Then I read your last sentence. ^_^

I love Silm fanart. There are some similarities, but I think there is quit a lot of variety.

Some things always bug me, like blonde!Celegorm. Just because he's called Celegorm the Fair doesn't make him blonde. I'm pretty sure all the sons of Feanor are either dark haired like their father or redheads like their mother.

But most of the time I love the fanart in this fandom. I'm amazed at how many skilled artists we have.
