Hated it, because it was treated as my price tag.

Of course, I also got that goddamn shitty Torn Paper Hearts talk in health class in high school, which didn't help anything. I have a MONDO chip on my shoulder about it.

It seems like everybody in abstinence-only classes were taught different metaphors for virginity (sneakers, chewing gum, cupcakes) that all boil down to the same stupid "having sex with multiple partners will make you used up and disgusting but having it many times with just one person makes you whole and unsullied" and each one is worse than the last.

I had abstinence-only sex-ed without any of the "sex dirties you" stuff or the weird metaphors. It was pretty obvious the teacher wanted to give us a comprehensive sex ed but wasn't allowed to.

She even taught us that you can stay a virgin til your wedding day and still get AIDs and herpes etc because your partner might have had pre-marital sex or be a cheater.

Man, I feel bad for your teacher. How awful must it be, to be pressured to AVOID educating the kids when that's your job in the first place?

Yeah. I actually tried to make a comic about it called 'Torn Paper Hearts,' because I got that talk during the Raping Year of my adolescence and had the effect of me going, "Oh, so that's why I feel so dirty and tainted and torn up. It's because I am." I've been unable to because it's still too emotional for me.

It's interesting, in that I've talked to a lot of folks what their abstinence metaphor was, and we seem to have been the only torn paper hearts one. I've seen all the others you mention, though. (Except cupcakes. ...I'm morbidly curious about the cupcakes.)

You gotta love how it's aimed at girls and the most important part is your hypothetical future husband's benefit.

Don't lose your precious vagina-rose, ladies! Or all you'll be left with is this phallic thorny stem and wait this is getting Freudian now.

Yeah, it was more or less the same thing, just replace the rose with a paper heart and petals with pieces.

Coincidentally, it was also one of the most emotionally accurate ways of depicting how rape and sexual abuse felt, which was QUITE the conflict of messages to send me at the time.
