Of course, I also got that goddamn shitty Torn Paper Hearts talk in health class in high school, which didn't help anything. I have a MONDO chip on my shoulder about it.

She even taught us that you can stay a virgin til your wedding day and still get AIDs and herpes etc because your partner might have had pre-marital sex or be a cheater.

It's interesting, in that I've talked to a lot of folks what their abstinence metaphor was, and we seem to have been the only torn paper hearts one. I've seen all the others you mention, though. (Except cupcakes. ...I'm morbidly curious about the cupcakes.)

Coincidentally, it was also one of the most emotionally accurate ways of depicting how rape and sexual abuse felt, which was QUITE the conflict of messages to send me at the time.
