Food doesn't just get wasted by consumers. On the business side, it is actually cheaper to throw away produce (such as leaving perfectly good apples on the ground) than it is to gather everything up and make sure everyone has access to it.

In addition I would posit that more food gets wasted by grocery stores than their customers

^^^this is what I was talking about. All the "imperfect" produce, the weird problems with donating surplus/expired food, etc.
