betareader woes

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate being a betareader for people who write with one hand down their pants.

A gasp threw through his as his body war with his mind to submit.

Yeah, ok buddy.

Argh. The whole fic is like this and there's like, 15 long chapters.

Is someone paying you to do this? If not, fuck it lol.

...woof. Ganbare, anon.

May flights of angels sing you to your rest.

I thank thee for thy words of encouragement. Well met.

What herpy said. The only exception I'd make is if English isn't this writer's native language, but even then... ugh, fixing all of that is too hard for 15 long chapters. If your writer does speak English as their first language, they're being abominably lazy. Having a beta isn't an excuse to not read through your fic at all before you send it to them.

I'm determined to see this through because the writer did a Nice Thing for me.

I'd be happier if they were ESL but they're not.
Apparently they're taking the bar soon so they kinda rushed this fic, idek.
They don't use paragraphs either so I'm just here... dying...

Oh man, I'm sorry, anon. :( I hope it was a very Nice Thing worthy of such a herculean effort you'll be taking.

Definitely include tips on how to properly break a scene into paragraphs in your concrit, and maybe suggest they at least proofread and read their own writing to themselves out loud to avoid weird jumbled non-sentences like the one you quoted.

*sobs*

Yeah, I'm definitely going to give them some pointers and suggestions. And they seemed pretty open/receptive to constructive criticism, so that's one less thing to worry about.

This sentence is such a mess that it's kind of amazing, actually. I'm impressed.

I'd be laughing if I wasn't crying.

1. I am so sorry
2. I misread this initially as "bedwetter woes"

Having been in a similar situation, once upon a time, I'd suggest you highlight the most egregious repeating errors in one section and tell them that they need to look for them in the rest, and then resubmit to you.

That may help a little, unless the entire manuscript is word salad, in which case, you could suggest they read the thing out loud, redraft, and resubmit.

+1 If a significant amount of the fic is like that sentence, that's asking too much even if they did you a favor, anon. You agreed to beta, the least they can do is write coherent sentences.

Holy crap, I would be embarrassed to submit anything to my beta like that!

(I may write with one hand down my pants, but I edit with both hands firmly on the keyboard.)
