This kind of stuff is why I religiously avoid "splurging" on any one particular fandom at a time. I get pissed off at/antagonistic towards things for absolutely no good reason, just because I see too much of it and get sick of it, and it screws with my opinions and ability to be appreciative and open-minded about things.

No matter how addicting the fandom is, mix it up with other activities, other fandoms, other interests, don't spend too much time buried in it, take a break.

Yeah, I have an EXTREMELY low fandom saturation point. It's why I can't follow fandom tumblrs without extensive blacklisting--after the amount of hobbit porn that showed up on my dash, I never wanted to see those movies or read that book ever.

If that shit pisses you off so much, ignore it

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Like wouldn't have Leia or Han or Luke recognized her?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the way Leia and Luke react to her when they first meet her comes across a little like recognition...ESPECIALLY Luke's reaction. I mean the guy is all deer-in-headlights, and I don't think that's just "OMG A PERSON."

It could be "OMG A FORCE SENSITIVE PERSON WHO ISN'T HORRIBLY DEAD" though.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Why wait until the next movie to reveal the connection? Wouldn't it have more impact at the end of a movie, than at the beginning of one?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
JJ Abrams was trying to convey with Rey and Leia's hug that "both of them being strong with the Force and never having met, would know about each other — that Leia would have been told about her beyond what we saw onscreen and Rey of course would have learned about Leia. And that reunion would be a meeting and a reunion all in one, and a sort of commiseration of their mutual loss."

And I thought Luke looked angry, which isn't the expression I'd expect for a long-lost daughter or niece.

Not if they never met her and she goes by a different name now. Not if Luke had some reason to keep her hidden from everyone. Not if one or both of them did suspect and the parts where she's about to be talked about and the scene cuts away are left off for the big twist (which would be kinda stupid).

I won't be annoyed if she is a Skywalker but I don't poke around the fandom so I haven't had any overexposure to that idea, otherwise I probably would find the insistence of it irritating.

She does not need to be...it would be cool, but she could have another cool backstory.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
At least based on comments that I've read it doesn't seem like her parents are going to be who we think, but of course they're probably totally lying, just like Cumberbatch wasn't Khan.

Really? I think it'd be a cheap asspull for her to be a Skywalker *shrug* Could still be done well, of course.

I'm kind of surprised so many fans are insistent on it, though I can understand why some are. But why is it a big deal?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would it be an asspull?
otakugal15: (Default)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2016-05-29 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seriously. Besides, Kennedy has stated before that the main films are about the Skywalkers. And since she followed SO MANY of the same things that Luke did in ANH, if she isn't one, I'll be majorly surprised. And disappointed.

Maybe "asspull" isn't the right word but considering how utterly predictable it would be, and that so much of TFA was sort of a repeat of previous stuff in Star Wars, I'd find it disappointing and uncreative.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, it's a complete asspull for her to receive the lightsaber that was Luke's and Anakin's... and then end up being a Skywalker. ABSOLUTE asspull.

I don't think she will be. I don't think she must be. As long as they keep writing her well, and Daisy keeps acting so well, I'm fine with almost whatever. (But pls not Reylo! Please!)

If anything, I come across people who insist it would be stupid if she is a Skywalker, but I see no reason why the backlash to that couldn't get just as intense.

I do want her to be a Skywalker, partly because I think the idea of Luke being her dad is weirdly adorable and partly because I want to see a legacy being passed from father to daughter rather than father to son for once. But I can thoroughly sympathize with your feelings because I've felt that way about fandom stuff more than once.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. The only thing that makes me not want them to be related is the unfortunate implication that Luke is a deadbeat dad who abandoned his daughter. Like, no way would Luke ever be a bad father. I'm still a little miffed at TFA for ruining his character.

I guess my main concern is just making sure Luke isn't the asshole here. Rey has had a pretty shit childhood.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
God, please let her be NO ONE. Let her be an astonishing force-sensitive with the potential to be a Jedi master and worthy of the mantle. But not actually in the damn Skywalker family. There were other Jedi in the universe for goodness' sake!
