Complaining about how there isn't enough variety in fan works, yet they don't support said variety when it shows up and stick to focusing on the popular characters and/or ships.

I've witnessed that happen more times than I can count.

The other thing that bothers me there is that most people shouting about it don't produce anything themselves.

Yeah this. Especially if they spend a lot of time and energy actively hating something they don't like. Just imagine if they put that same time and energy in actually creating content for things they do like...

This is true. Hell, I only drew as much fan art as I did, because I didn't want to sit around complaining there was nothing out there. Ah well. (Nowadays, I don't do much fan art anymore since I'm no longer active in fandoms these days, though, but that's neither here nor there, haha.)

Yup. I also find it really entitled because they're expecting everyone else to make fanwork for them, which isn't easy and it takes time and effort(so no shock that people stick with the characters they love best).

Oh it definitely is, anyone pretending otherwise is lying.

I've got characters that I wish were more popular sure but it's not other people's jobs to make fanwork for them, but I sure as heck encourage anyone I see writing/making art about those faves.

I think that's a considerable part of it, but there could be people who are tired of the same fan fic tropes/plots/etc rather than "wah, you're not writing/drawing my favorites". Thing is, not everyone has the skills to write, so that's where the break down (such as it is) begins to happen.
