The ONE thing that pisses you off the most about you fandom(s)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Pick one (or several) of your fandoms, and then select just ONE thing about them that pisses you off the most.

No long list complaining about all the various things that piss you off about it -- just one top gripe per fandom.

Any fandom's need to be crazy polarized.

Character's actions didn't sit quite right with you? HE IS THE DEVIL

Current iteration of this in my life would be, of course, fall out from Civil War. In particular people using Tony recruiting Peter to call Tony THE WORST HUMAN EVER. I agree it was kinda clunky, y'all, but they had to get a teenaged American character shoehorned into a battle set in Europe for the length of a cameo. Cmon y'all.

The policing

You're not liking the right character! You're racist/sexist/homophobic/insert-here for not liking (and writing/drawing) this character! You do like them? Well, you don't like them enough! And you're liking them the wrong way! And you should feel bad! Cater to me!

People bitching about how anyone who disagrees with them about fandom is POLITICAL CORRECTNESS and POLICING THEM

My fandom is dying and the only active pairing surviving is one I could never stand.

for the supernatural fandom, people who keep pestering the cast/producers about destiel and keep accusing them of "queerbaiting." the season finale didn't queerbait you; there's was literally nothing about it that contained queerbaiting. you're queerbaiting yourselves because you keep getting your expectations too high for no damn reason and then get devastated when those expectations are, unsurprisingly, not fulfilled. get it together, please

I only follow one series, really, but in talking with some fandom friends I see it applies across the board to anything episodic (long-running TV series, manga, etc): people's need to over-analyze the chapter/issue/episode that just came out as a standalone and make sweeping judgments about how good/bad the series is based on that installment alone rather than waiting to see how it fits into the overall arc or season.

getting real tired of fandom being full of fans screaming their displeasure because a character isn't exactly what they assumed they would be or a plotline isn't what they predicted it would be based on one episode. One page. One panel of a page sometimes. They see one moment and make snap judgments about who the character is, what they're going to do, and how the story will suffer for their actions even though there are zero context clues for how the plot is about to go. And then fill the fandom tags with their kvetching instead of just saying "well that was interesting I wonder what will happen next."

Kinkshaming? But that's a lot of fandoms nowadays.

Complaining about how there isn't enough variety in fan works, yet they don't support said variety when it shows up and stick to focusing on the popular characters and/or ships.

I've witnessed that happen more times than I can count.

If someone's favorite character or ship is anything less than the single fandom juggernaut, they'll make a fuss about how everyone hates it and everyone has unfair double standards for it compared to all the others in the fandom.

Repeatedly pestering the creators for background information on the characters, especially on subjects they've already said they are pointedly and deliberately not discussing.

"Criminal Minds" fandom: the attitude a lot of fans have towards female characters. Everyone was rightfully angry when CBS let go of AJ and Paget, and went on and on about how sexist the network was for doing so.

But then I see a lot of those same fans referring to Elle or Haley as "bitches". Hotch's girlfriend Beth was called a "hussy". Seaver got dumped on like mad because she was unfortunate enough to come into the show at the most wrong time ever and got blamed for things she had no control over*. People automatically hated on Blake, Kate, and Tara BEFORE they even saw them on the show, simply because they weren't Emily. And I saw a lot of really nasty comments about Jennifer Love Hewitt's looks online when it was announced she was joining the show :/.

(I get missing a favorite character, of course, and if Blake/Kate/Tara wound up not being to someone's liking 'cause the character seemed bland to them or the chemistry just wasn't there or whatever, fine...but shouldn't they wait and decide that until AFTER they've seen them in action on the show?)

*And then Seaver, and now JJ in recent seasons, have been and are being called Mary Sues for doing/having the same things the fans love in the male characters. I adore the men on the show, too, they're wonderful, but let's not deny any hints of Gary/Marty Stu in their character setups, either-tragic backstories, they've got all these impressive skills, etc. Heck, going back to the women, many fans adore Emily and Garcia, and rightly so, 'cause they're awesome, but...Garcia's a super tech whiz and Emily can speak multiple languages and has the tried and true "mysterious past", and both women have some sad backstories as well. But they don't get referred to as "Mary Sues" anywhere near as often as JJ or Seaver do/did.

(Personally, I would naturally expect ANY male or female character on this show to have top notch skills, 'cause they're kind of supposed to be an elite group of FBI agents. If this were a comedy spoofing the FBI, they could get by with being incompetent. But it's not, so...)

Anyway, tl;dr-a lot of the criticisms the fandom made towards CBS for mistreating the women on this show are ones they might want to direct towards themselves.

The thing that pisses me off the most is when fans can't allow everyone to like what they like in peace and insist on judging other people for what they like (ships, characters, etc.) or insisting their opinions are wrong and they must agree with what that fan thinks is right instead.

Supernatural: the ship wars, dear Chuck, the ship wars! If it's not Wincest vs Destiel, it's people having heated arguments on the One True Way to Wincest. And everybody jumps all over the Demara shippers for shipping something "problematic" but don't you DARE say anything bad about A/B/O because that's kinkshaming.

Doctor Who: people who act like preferring the the original to the reboot is somehow a marker of personal virtue. (Bonus points if they accuse new fans of just being "fangirls" who got into it because David Tennant or Matt Smith was hot.)

Star Wars: I don't even ship Reylo, and I'm annoyed by the anti-Reylo shippers.

Criminal Minds (different anon than poster above): why on earth is most of the fic those stupid 'imagines' or character/reader or whatever you call them? I'd seen them in other fandoms too, but never to this extent. And why CM? If ever there was a show where pretty much any pairing was possible considering no pairing is shoved forward by TPTB, but then fans choose this instead. I don't see the appeal.

(about the other CM post: I haven't been in the CM fandom very long and tend to stay away from general discussion to lurk in my shippy corner, but yeah, that's a crappy attitude)

f/f pairings that people only ship because they ship all the m/m in the series but don't want to be accused of ignoring the female characters.

The people who don't ship the incest ships say that anyone who does ship them supports actual incest in real life and also are pedophiles.

Honestly, what aggravates me most in Steven Universe fandom is people who react to controversy by doubling down. In whitewashing controversy, they draw white Garnet, in fat-shaming controversy, they draw anorexic Rose, etc. It's the smug self-satisfaction that really gets to me, like they actually think they're better than the people they're supposedly mocking.

Currently, how fandom tries to turn every bullshit thing into a social justice issue, and HOW DARE YOU if you don't buy in.

Like, yesterday I had a post on my dash about how if you're in the DA fandom and you don't reblog all those posts speaking up about whitewashing then you're a racist and just as bad as the people making those mods. Like, no. No, sorry sweethearts, but someone not reblogging your rants doesn't make them a racist.

Then there was the "make Emily gay" thing in the Dishonored fandom. Apparently b/c Arkane hasn't definitively announced that Emily will have a gf in DH2 that makes them horrible bigots. Because Dishonored is known for its romance plotlines, right? And the game is coming out in a few months so that's plenty of time to shoehorn a romance in to appease a handful of teenagers, right? And anyone who says they don't care if Emily has a gf or not is also a lesbophobe.

Delusional fans.

It's pretty much always that.

Whether they think actual people are really in a relationship and are awful about it (hounding people, asking uncomfortable questions, name-calling significant others, etc.) or they believe that a ship should become canon and are awful about it (hounding people, asking awkward questions, name-calling actors that play significant others, etc.). It's always terrible.

Homestuck: the lack of standardisaition for ship names (in the sense of: too many variations floating around). True story: I once saw a fanfic labelled with three different names for the same ship and assumed they were three different ships.
Also, some of the common names are unintuitive (and use a different system to the majority). "Roxygen" confused me for ages :/

...Sometimes being introduced to shipping via Pokémon fandom is a bad thing. This is one of those times. (The carefully curated ship list with literal thousands of ships and specific ship name system kinda spoiled me ^_^; )
