Re: The ONE thing that pisses you off the most about you fandom(s)
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)But then I see a lot of those same fans referring to Elle or Haley as "bitches". Hotch's girlfriend Beth was called a "hussy". Seaver got dumped on like mad because she was unfortunate enough to come into the show at the most wrong time ever and got blamed for things she had no control over*. People automatically hated on Blake, Kate, and Tara BEFORE they even saw them on the show, simply because they weren't Emily. And I saw a lot of really nasty comments about Jennifer Love Hewitt's looks online when it was announced she was joining the show :/.
(I get missing a favorite character, of course, and if Blake/Kate/Tara wound up not being to someone's liking 'cause the character seemed bland to them or the chemistry just wasn't there or whatever, fine...but shouldn't they wait and decide that until AFTER they've seen them in action on the show?)
*And then Seaver, and now JJ in recent seasons, have been and are being called Mary Sues for doing/having the same things the fans love in the male characters. I adore the men on the show, too, they're wonderful, but let's not deny any hints of Gary/Marty Stu in their character setups, either-tragic backstories, they've got all these impressive skills, etc. Heck, going back to the women, many fans adore Emily and Garcia, and rightly so, 'cause they're awesome, but...Garcia's a super tech whiz and Emily can speak multiple languages and has the tried and true "mysterious past", and both women have some sad backstories as well. But they don't get referred to as "Mary Sues" anywhere near as often as JJ or Seaver do/did.
(Personally, I would naturally expect ANY male or female character on this show to have top notch skills, 'cause they're kind of supposed to be an elite group of FBI agents. If this were a comedy spoofing the FBI, they could get by with being incompetent. But it's not, so...)
Anyway, tl;dr-a lot of the criticisms the fandom made towards CBS for mistreating the women on this show are ones they might want to direct towards themselves.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)The thing that's the worst is that CM makes amazing female characters. They made me like Straus! That's a thing I didn't think could happen.
CM is one of those shows where I watch but don't engage too much in fandom. There was one place I used to go for episode reactions but it fizzled and I haven't found anywhere new. But I did see some of the Seaver hate, and I could guess Blake's actress left because of it too (which made me so sad because I really liked her).
The whole thing is stupid because there are so many great characters to love. If someone rubs you the wrong way, I get it. But CM is great about leaving things open so your fave can come back; it doesn't need to be a competition. It was great to have Emily back in 200 where she and Blake got to meet and talk. That was awesome. I want many more female characters from CM. It's just sad that real women are going to have to deal with such shit just for doing their job (and doing it well!). Actually, some of Paget's fans have soured me a bit on Emily's character. :( Why do they feel there's only so much love to go around?
Re: The ONE thing that pisses you off the most about you fandom(s)
(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 01:52 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I got into the show around the time season 8 was going on, so I was lucky to be able to look at season 6 and Seaver with the benefit of time and distance. And I felt pretty much the same way about her that you did. I agree there's valid critiques to make of the way she wound up on the team, sure, but she was a nice person and clicked well enough with the others. And I really liked the bond she had with Rossi, and the way Emily kinda took her under her wing a bit.
I feel bad for the way the actress was treated, too. Especially considering how unceremoniously she was let go from the show-CBS didn't even tell her personally, she found out while online or something like that, which is incredibly shitty. Fortunately, it sounds like the people who worked on the show itself treated her well, so that's something good.
The thing that's the worst is that CM makes amazing female characters. They made me like Straus! That's a thing I didn't think could happen.
They really do, yes! For all the criticism the show gets for its violent content (especially towards women), I wish those people could see how well they write the female characters on there. The women on the team are actually genuine friends, there's no backstabbing and petty fights over guys or stepping on each other to get promotions. They support each other in rough moments, they have their own lives, (and the ones that are married or in relationships, those relationships are important, of course, but their husbands/boyfriends are not the only thing their lives revolve around). They're smart, and good-hearted, and tough in a variety of ways.
And agreed on Strauss. I liked that they allowed us to sympathize with her when she had to make some of the tougher calls-she had bosses she had to answer to as well, and a lot of the concerns she had about the team were valid ones, especially in season 2 with all the personal crap the team was dealing with that impacted their jobs. And towards the end of her time on the show, she did become more of an ally of theirs. I appreciate that they gave her some complexity.
I haven't gotten too far into the fandom, either-most of the fans I've talked with have been through Fanfiction.net or SpoilerTV and TV Line, where there's often some sort of discussion about the show from time to time. Most of the message boards I've come across seem pretty quiet and/or dead, and there's a few Livejournal fanfic sites that seem to be the same way.
But with FF.net and the TV sites, I do run across some of that attitude sometimes, and it just makes me shake my head. I don't know all the details about the reasons for Blake leaving the show, but I really do hope it wasn't because of the fan reception to her, because I loved her, too. She was awesome. And I liked that she added a bit of balance in terms of the generation difference between the older members of the team and the younger ones.
Yes, yes, yes. Exactly :D. I love that they seem determined to not want to kill off any of the main team members, that when any of them do leave, they write them out in a way that allows them to come back if they so wish. In an era where it seems killing off main characters is the fashionable thing for shows to do, it's kinda nice to have one that respects the fans' love for the characters, and lets them live on even when they aren't on the show.
The bond between the cast and crew is one of the things I love most about the show-CBS may treat the show and the cast like crap, but I like that the cast and crew seem to genuinely get on well, and care about each other. It says a lot about Paget's love for the show and people itself that she's been willing and eager to come back for guest spots despite the way CBS treated her.
And agreed on Emily and Blake being friends, and having more of that sort of thing. Someday I want to write a story about all the women who've come and gone over the years meeting up somehow, and swapping stories about their time on the team and getting to know each other and whatnot :p.
It's just sad that real women are going to have to deal with such shit just for doing their job (and doing it well!). Actually, some of Paget's fans have soured me a bit on Emily's character. :( Why do they feel there's only so much love to go around?
Agreed on your first sentence, and as for your question, I don't know. I love Emily, too, but I do wish some people would give the other women more of a chance, 'cause they've all been pretty cool as well. I honestly love all the characters, past and present. I think they've all brought something special and interesting to the team and the show itself.
(That seems to be an issue with a lot of shows nowadays, a lot of fans seem to only like one or two characters at most. Which, to each their own, and with all my favorite shows, I have characters that are particular favorites, that's fine. But I personally find it hard to stick with a show if I don't like at least most of the characters on there.)
And if Paget ever changed her mind about returning to the show full-time, then fantastic, I'm all for it. But as of now, she's made it clear she's not planning to do that, and it's been four years, so I wish fans would just learn to respect that and quit hounding the show about it (it's especially funny they yell at the showrunner/writers-they DO realize they'd love to have her back, too, right? But they have no control over her decisions).
Er, yeah, so this post got rather long-winded, LOL. But in short, I agree with your sentiments :).
