The Hobbit films were basically the Star Wars prequels for the LOTR universe. Peter had good ideas, but like Lucas with the Star Wars prequels, they were just executed very awfully.

Which is funny because the source material here came first. Though they were also written as essentially an excuse plot to explore a setting.
