Well, OP, I'm currently watching the Cabin Fever remake. ...So I'll get back to you and we can compare notes.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt like my intelligence was being personally insulted by the writers and director for the entire hour-long idiotic battle sequence, so I guess "offended" is a good way to describe it. That Super Mario Bros falling-debris-hopping shot still makes me angry just thinking about it.

(Also, I will never forgive this movie (and DoS but mostly this one) for making me hate Legolas. I absolutely adored him in the books, was okay with him in the LOTR movies, but in the Hobbit movies I wanted to punch him until he vanished from the space-time continuum.)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Uuuuugghhhhhh the hobbit movies were sooooo bad.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
To this day I am still somewhat stunned they were ever allowed to be released and distributed. Who looks at that shit and goes "yep, this is theater-worthy"?

I still maintain that losing Guillermo Del Toro is the worst thing that could have happened to the Hobbit films. Tragedy. Peter Jackson did the job, but he wasn't who he originally planned. Disaster, imo.

For me that was True Story.

As a movie, it as pretty bad.

i mean it had all these lovely elements and characters - but it just messed up suspense, timing, pacing, story.

I was one of the rare creatures who had actually not read the book going in...so yeah.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the fact that it had several very worthwhile and promising elements that were all callously flushed down the toilet in a cloudy swirling maelstrom of diarrhea was the worst part of that movie tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
See, while I had read the book, it wasn't a book comparison that bugged me. I expected changes. I hoped for changes, because a) I don't think The Hobbit book has the right pacing to be a successful movie and b) I think a smoother transition to LOTR was absolutely necessary.

The trilogy was awful totally independent of being different from the book.

Tank Girl

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I thought it was well made for a product movie, as opposed to something like Tank Girl. Hewlett described the studio meddling as something like, "The Italian job in reverse, digging down from a bank vault into a pile of shit." Key scenes didn't even get out of post-production.

[personal profile] nightscale 2016-05-29 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't hate this movie but it was sadly wasted potential, should have been just two movies and then the pacing may have been better. Also no Legolas or not not any longer than a very small cameo, much as I love him in LoTR, because he really got too much screentime for no particularly good reason.

They were better than the book *shrugs* The only complaint I have is that, despite only have one book as source material, the first two movies were great and the third felt unnecessarily dragged out and long. I liked the little additions the movies had.

I also liked that the movies actually gave personality and uniqueness to each of the dwarves which is something the book never did.

No dog in this fight, but I think a lot of the vitriol the Hobbit films get is ridiculous. Chill the fuck out, folks, it's just a set of movies. Don't like it? Don't watch it again. Christ.

I wouldn't say I was offended. But overall they just aren't good movies. There are bits of them I really love, which makes it even more sad because the potential was there.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm. I had the same reaction to BvS. That was the only time in my life that I have ever shed actual tears of anger and frustration in a theater. It was very unexpected for me, as I was both unaware that I was capable of having that level of emotion about a movie or that I even cared that strongly about the subject matter.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)

The Hobbit films were basically the Star Wars prequels for the LOTR universe. Peter had good ideas, but like Lucas with the Star Wars prequels, they were just executed very awfully.

production for the films is kind of infamous for being a complete and total mess that peter jackson was extremely unenthusiastic about directing (before he was selected as the series' director, his response to the question of whether or not he would direct the films was basically "if I have to"). it's too bad that del toro didn't end up directing them as was the original plan; regardless of how you feel about him as a director, he was very obviously enthusiastic about directing The Hobbit and poured a lot of love into pre-production before a combination of issues led to him leaving the production. I would have liked to see what he came up with.

I would definitely recommend that people read about what happened with The Hobbit behind the scenes because it's funny in a depressing sort of way. It made me feel kind of sorry for everyone involved:

I watched this movie at home with my boyfriend and we spent the whole length of the movie making fun of it mercilessly. We couldn't stop laughing. I can't believe the amount of money and work and time that went into something so thoroughly and irredeemably awful.

That there is a big fandom and ships of the movie versions of the characters is frankly depressing tho.
