production for the films is kind of infamous for being a complete and total mess that peter jackson was extremely unenthusiastic about directing (before he was selected as the series' director, his response to the question of whether or not he would direct the films was basically "if I have to"). it's too bad that del toro didn't end up directing them as was the original plan; regardless of how you feel about him as a director, he was very obviously enthusiastic about directing The Hobbit and poured a lot of love into pre-production before a combination of issues led to him leaving the production. I would have liked to see what he came up with.

I would definitely recommend that people read about what happened with The Hobbit behind the scenes because it's funny in a depressing sort of way. It made me feel kind of sorry for everyone involved:

No thanks. Every Del Toro film has bored the shit out of me. If I have to choose I'll take bad but entertaining over any self-important turd Guillermo Del Toro would've shat out.

This makes a ton of sense tbh :\

People sometimes forget that a director does not cause a film to material out of nothing according exactly to his ideas of what should be happening.

This is actually really depressing.
