Part of the reason VI is my favorite Final Fantasy. What happened to not having a designated protagonist shoved down our throats?

Absolute ditto on FF6! (I actually went on at length (http://eldena.livejournal.com/132103.html) about exactly that in my journal some time ago, to prove it.) It's still my favorite numerical Final Fantasy, and it really did leave a huge impression on me as a wee one. And it's totally the cast of characters that did it.

Personally, I never get sick of watching a bunch of people come together, form a cohesive group, and start developing a variety of relationships as narrative-equals. That's a whole lot more interesting to me than just following the specialness of one special guy, but it sure seems like I'm in the minority there.

YES. Exactly.

It's all about the relationships. You can have Setzer who tries to marry Celes who begins to develop feelings for Locke who is good friends with Edgar who is very close to his brother Sabin who develops the most amusing odd friendship with Cyan and Gau. It's a team of people whose stories and actions intersect and come together, carrying out the plot, as opposed to a bunch of people who follow a leader. Personally, I think that the cast and the way it was presented was one of the defining characteristics of the game, and it saddens me that the concept of an ensemble cast continues to be largely ignored.
