Ghibli is always wonderful in its presentation-- top notch animation, voice acting, music-- but compared to the storytelling and writing to say his many other classic films (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies), its very weak and confusing. And, as you can see, many are not satisfied with its adaption. I agree too that the ending and character development was practically rushed at the end.

However, this reminds me though-- even as one of his weakest films, its still presented so well.

Perhaps it's just me, then, and my lack of knowledge about movies ^^;
But for me it was a good movie, and I intend to live in ignorant bliss about the various details so I'll be able to enjoy it without thinking critically. Thanks for the explanation, though!
