CAN I GET AN AMEN UP IN HERE?

Seriously, the movie is its own thing and it's good, but, well... it's not the book. And the book is just so spectacular! Not to mention due to Japanese sexism (and yes IT IS THERE, Japanophiles), movie!Sophie is not NEARLY as strong as book!Sophie. Sure, she's still a strong character, but I totally CAN NOT respect her as much as the book Sophie.

It's all the crying and that DAMN hissy fit she throws when Howl's throwing his fit. Book!Sophie handled that SO much better. <3

44- Sexism is definitely prominent in Japan. However, Miyazaki is an avowed feminist and goes out of his way to write strong heroines. Movie!Sophie is less BITCHY than book Sophie, but that does not in the least make her less strong.

Note: I do not think book Sophie is a bitch.

Oh, I don't think that movie!Sophie is weak, but she's not at all the same character, and frankly, in my opinion, does not kick as much ass as book!Sophie.

Miyazaki IS always wonderful with his female characters. But he took the character of Sophie and made her a much more traditional female heroine. Where book!Sophie is nosy, stubborn to a fault, headstrong, ill tempered at times (and this is what makes her such a good match for Howl's own stubborn and fickle nature), movie!Sophie is sweeter, more self sacrificing, more prone to tears, and over all softer. She has a more traditional "good girl" spirit, whereas, yes, book!Sophie can be a total bitch sometimes. Movie!Sophie is still able to save those she cares about and have her own adventures, but they seem to focus more on what others want, while book!Sophie does things for others but also because she WANTS to do them.

Some people like the book best, some people like the movie better. Sometimes I can enjoy the traditional heroine, but when comparing the two Sophies, I just can NOT respect the movie!Sophie as much. She isn't as independent of a character.

I take issue with the sexism complaint though. I don't think Sophie was changed because of sexism at all, because I think there's nothing sexist about the changes.

I think book Sophie is as much a cliche as movie Sophie. The whip smart independent girl is no less cliche than the good girl.

Not to mention, book Sophie starts out as a total doormat. She lets everything slide because she's the eldest and this continues throughout much of the story. Movie Sophie is insecure because of her appearance, book Sophie is insecure because of her position in the family.

Both Sophies are extremely independent. I don't get where movie Sophie isn't. She does nearly everything on her own from her own ideas, with little help. Yes she does things for others, but well why not? Book Sophie does this to a fault near the beginning as well.

I don't understand what about movie Sophie could possibly garner less "respect" than book Sophie is all. I'll never understand why fandom automatically views the girl that cries sometimes and is soft as not as strong and kick-ass as the "bitchy" girl. It's a major fandom pet peeve. There's more to being strong and kick ass than how snarky and opposed to being helped by others you can be (which aren't necessarily traits that denote strength anyway). Movie Sophie has immense emotional strength and kicks loads of ass.

I like both characters and don't prefer one over the other, but I actually think movie Sophie is a stronger person.

I agree with anon below me. I liked Movie!Sophie alot better than book Sophie, mainly because movie!Sophie was much less selfish, and generally alot softer. I don't think you can compare the two, because both are equally strong in their own right. book!Sophie has obvious faults which were her weak point in dealing with the Witch of the Waste, whereas Sophie also has her flaws that hold her back as well.
