Attractiveness trends

(Anonymous) 2016-05-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
So obviously the general idea of what's attractive changes over time. But not everyone is most attracted to their own era's ideal man/woman. Or at least, I don't find the typical hot guy/hot girl looks that seem to be popular right now very attractive.

So, what era's "look" do you like the best? Do you have difference preferences for men and women?

If you could influence trends, what sort of looks would you want to become popular in the future?

I honestly don't really care, I just wish we were in an era where facial hair is less popular again.

I agree so, so much. I hardly ever see guys my own age without it. It's a bit depressing.

AGREED. I'm getting tired of seeing hipster beards with glasses.

The "Civil War General" beard look, as someone here put it, needs to die and die hard.

Uh, probably like... Viking aesthetic? Men with long hair and braids. Only cleaner.
In terms of clothing, I wish we all just wore *prettier* stuff. Nowadays, you can do so much with machinery that once took painstaking hand-sewing. I would love something more Victorian-esque, but without the corsets.
And men should wear cooler clothes with more colors. Like they do in Korea.

Maybe pre-Raphaelite/Aesthetic fashion from the late 19th century?

I don't know if I have a specific era type. I'm into long hair on everyone and into medieval/fantasy styles. I'm also into casual clothes on men (I'm not a fan of suits on men and I hate the way ties look).

Dang, I love suits. Do you dislike tuxes too? What about other kinds of formal wear, like stuff that's big in other cultures outside western white culture?

I think it's a shame men don't have more options for dressing up. Like women can wear so many styles of blouses/dresses/suits and men have...a suit or a tux, depending on how formal it is, and that's it. And while I think suits and tuxes are hot, it'd be cool if there were more variety esp. because I know some guys don't like wearing them :/

(Anonymous) 2016-05-31 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Tuxes are meh. It isn't the pants. Slacks are fine. It is the blazers. Men's jackets I'm not fond of. They are much less form conscious then woman's. And I despise the way any ties look. What is the purpose of a tie?

The only non-western men's formal wear I've seen are Philippine barongs, which are okay, but again not so form conscious. I like form conscious clothes. Why can't men wear clothes that show off their shape more often like women do?

(philstar or new anon?)

ah, I guess that's the difference then. I'm pretty indifferent to whether clothes are form-fitting on guys, especially because I think most of them sort of are anyway? Guys are in general pretty rectangular in shape, they don't have much in the way of curves that can be concealed.

I do not know the original purpose of a tie but I guess it's just like any other accessory, something you wear to look a certain way. idk I like them.

I thought the greaser aesthetic was pretty hot. Both the girls and the guys.

Me too. I love that look, but I don't see a lot of guys my age sporting the greaser aesthetic. I do see a few girls every now and then dressed in that manner.

Same here. Even though the time period is something I'd NEVER want to visit, I do like the aesthetic on guys.

I've also liked the variety Japan has. Wild Zero basically fulfills my needs for friendlier rockabilly. THANKS WILD ZERO! :D

(For women, my weakness is 20s flapper.)

"Friendlier rockabilly" LMAO. Um, no, give me the real thing, please, in all its problematic and objectifying glory. That's rather the appeal.

Even though the time period is something I'd NEVER want to visit

It's interesting that the 50s are the only time period on this thread that merits this disclaimer.

Women: 1920s/1930s

Men: mid-to-late 19th century

Both: ANCIENT GREECE. MOTHERFUCKIN' TOGAS.

I have to admit... I'm not hugest fan of the "trend feature". For example, big spherical fake tits and button noses of the 90's, or the Nicki Minaj booty of today. I like all shapes and sizes, I like variety, and I highly prefer uniqueness over a specific look.

Honestly, I kinda miss the men's jeans styles that were more in style in the 80s and 90s. Everything now is either super-tight or super-baggy, and I just want a happy medium. T_T

I like eras that had little to no make-up being used. Seeing "natural beauty" and proof that women don't have to pack on 30 pounds of make up to look beautiful inspires me.

I also like 1800-1920 style clothing fashions.

Re: Attractiveness trends

I'm actually pretty okay with what's in style now, apart from hipster facial hair

undercuts, tight pants, even manbuns are fine on some people

I want short hair on everyone to be popular selfishly because I don't find long hair attractive

Re: Attractiveness trends

I have no idea if my tastes match an "era" - I've never really researched that. Most celebs past and present are not very attractive to me, with a couple exceptions (pre-plastic surgery Michael Jackson was a cutie pie, for example).

My tastes tend away from "traditionally hyper-masculine" even though I'm straight and definitely into dudes. I guess I just like dudes who are more stereotypically pretty than hunky.

I don't care what kinds of looks are popular now or in the future. I'm much more focused on people I know IRL who I might actually have a chance to date than celebs.

What looks are attractive to you, anon, if you didn't already extrapolate? (about to read the thread)
