I like Star Trek: Voyager better than The Next Generation. The fact that I also like DS9 better than TNG isn't so controversial. But the first I'm sure is.

For me it is the characters. I'm enjoying TNG on the rewatch, but I liked the other two better because the characters were more interesting to me. Other than Data, I don't really gravitate towards any of the TNG characters. None of them intrigue me as much as the ones on the other two series.

I loved the later seasons of Voyager because of Seven. When I first watched TNG and got to the episode with Hugh I really hoped he would stick around as a regular, because a Borg character on a Federation ship? So much potential for awesome storytelling there! But sadly Hugh was only in one other episode. :(

Then Voyager came along and gave me everything I wanted and more in the form of Seven. Fuck yeah.

I love Seven, though I also loved Kes. I loved Janeway and B'Lanna and Tuvok as well. My recent rewatch reminded me of why I loved it so much. Whereas my current TNG rewatch reminded me that as great as the show is and as much as I love the plots, I don't love the characters as much.

Something I've noticed about TNG - of all the Trek series I've watched (TOS, TNG, VOY, and DS9), I thought it had the best plotting and the weakest characterization. And a big part of that, I think, was due to under-using the talents of some of its actors. Like, Troi for example. Marina Sirtis is a great actress, but the show's writers didn't let her do anything until season 6!

Compare that to Voyager, which is the polar opposite: shit plotting, but strong characterization.

That's exactly how I feel. Although I think DS9 is the one that had both strong characterization and strong plotting.

I can actually see that in a lot of ways TNG is a better show, it is just that character is really important to me and the Voyager characters were more interesting. Even when the plotting was bad, I was interested in the characters.

Eh, that's fair. I just don't like the character work on VOY, mostly. A really strong cast generally but I don't think they did interesting things with it. But I agree that TNG isn't really a character-based show either; I think it just had sharper writing on an episode-to-episode basis, and if you did like the characters on VOY, I can see why you'd prefer it.

Oh, I do agree that TNG has sharper writing. Character is just the thing I need most in a fandom. Which is actually why I like DS9 best: it has the perfect mix of both great writing and great characters that I love.
