Enh, I think some folks do it because from what I've heard, going from fanart to non-fanart can sometimes be a REALLY rough transition. (I wouldn't know personally, since I have never been very good at fanart.) So if the diversity thing lets them sorta straddle, more power to them, I guess.

Also, if a character isn't well-described in a book, you can get away with it pretty easy! If the only description for the character is, "he had a face like a foot and a smile like Hell's PR man," well, they can look like ANYTHING practically.
