I hate when artists make all the characters chubby/dark-skinned/hairy/every type of diversity they can think of. Why not just draw original characters since your fanart looks nothing like the canon characters?

I think with some series and characters that kind of approach can work.

Take Homestuck, for example. The main cast are intentionally designed to be sort of blank slates visually, and the human kids especially don't have much in the way of defining features aside from the very basics of a what a human being looks like. There's lots of room to get creative there while still keeping the characters recognizable as themselves. If you draw a picture of John Egbert with dark skin and facial hair, it will still be instantly recognizable as John Egbert as long as you keep the features emphasized in his canon design (namely, the glasses, hairstyle, and buck teeth).

But that doesn't work with every canon. It definitely doesn't work with live-action canons.

Because you get more attention that way.

But I ask the same thing about fanfics. I have no interest in an AU where nothing but the characters' names are remotely like canon... but apparently a lot of people do.

MTE....'what would happen if this character was Asian and lived on the moon in an underground coffee shop?' ...... and as cool as that sounds, that's not remotely close to where the story takes place

An underground moon coffee shop would be an excellent setting for an original SF novel, though.

Yeah, I .... kind of want to write that now.

Do it. I will buy your book and tell all my friends about it.

This was actually one of my big gripes with Wicked (especially the book). He changed so much about Oz in order to turn it grim n'gritty that it didn't even say anything about the story, anymore. It wasn't a retelling from the Wicked Witch of the West's perspective.
It was a retelling if the Wicked Witch of the West lived in a different world governed by different rules where different things happened. Gee.

Enh, I think some folks do it because from what I've heard, going from fanart to non-fanart can sometimes be a REALLY rough transition. (I wouldn't know personally, since I have never been very good at fanart.) So if the diversity thing lets them sorta straddle, more power to them, I guess.

Also, if a character isn't well-described in a book, you can get away with it pretty easy! If the only description for the character is, "he had a face like a foot and a smile like Hell's PR man," well, they can look like ANYTHING practically.

I agree, it IS annoying when people insist that it's TOTALLY OTACON FROM MGS YOU GUYS! and leaves you wondering when a skinny white guy turned into a chubby black girl who doesn't shave (No, I haven't seen that personally, but it probably exists somewhere.)

On the other hand, it IS fun to experiment with different skin tones/body shapes without having to worry about creating your own character from scratch.
