Re: Controversial (fandom) Opinions

It's because of the political and historical baggage.

Captain America was a character created during WWII by two Jewish men to oppose Nazism and promote anti-fascist ideals. Taking such a character and retconning his backstory into "He was secretly a sleeper agent for a Nazi offshoot organization all along!" is hugely disrespectful to his creators and more than a little anti-Semitic, specially when one considers all the wacko conspiracy theories about how the Holocaust was a fabrication and Jews and Nazis were secretly in cahoots.

True, this particular type of shitty plot twist is nothing new. But with this particular character it's in really, really, REALLY bad taste.

Jesus Christ. I agree this is a dumbass move but I'm pretty sure Marvel didn't decide to mess with Captain America because of antisemitism.

No, of course they didn't.

Having the control be so total that he killed one of his old superhero pals was a bit much. You'd think, after all the whinging about killing off D-Man (who's back now, by way of apology) and Nomad (or was that just me whinging?) that they wouldn't now turn around & have implanted-memories!Steve kick Jack Flag out an aircraft with no parachute.

But no, I don't think it's anti-Semitism, and the arguments claiming it is are silly.

Marvel has a history of doing really shitty and offensive things with its Jewish characters though, so it's not that much of a stretch to call this part of an larger trend.

And just because they don't intend for it to be anti-Semitic doesn't mean that it isn't.

Also, isn't the CEO of Marvel Israeli?

But we don't even know what the full deal is yet. We don't know how it's going to play out, we don't know the entire backstory behind it, we don't know anything, so it seems ridiculously premature to be judging it.

It's still a fucking stupid and contrived plot twist that makes no sense in the context of the Marvel universe and was obviously done solely for the shock value. Even if it's not offensive (though I'd argue it is), it's lazy writing.
