No, I'm saying it's pointless to discuss Trump on this community at all unless you're a progressive who thinks he's racist scum. That is the only true, decent, and socially acceptable opinion.

I think Trump is doing whatever he can to stall the case. I mean duh. But yes, let's make everything all about race 24/7 and then act offended when the other side does the same thing.

Re: Trump Again

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
There are demonstrably Trump supporters on here, whether or not they choose to read a thing or respond. I've talked to some of them, at some length. So I don't see how it's pointless.

And I'm not sure how much I agree with that defense. I mean, this is someone who is trying to be president - is it really a good thing that he's willing to resort to anything, including talking shit about a Mexican-American judge's dual loyalties, in order to stall a case? Is it really a justification that it's in his interests? How much does that matter? To me, I think it was wrong.

is it really a good thing that he's willing to resort to anything

Yes. That is his entire appeal.

Trump 2016.

Re: Trump Again

So no code, no principles, matter? Just a willingness to do anything?

Re: Trump Again

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what to tell you. There are a lot of Americans who feel like there are entirely too many fucks being given about entirely too many trivial things in this country right now. Someone like Trump who doesn't give a fuck is a welcome change.

Re: Trump Again

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I appreciate it is a fact. I understand it to a degree - while I do believe in political correctness, I think we've mostly done a pretty awful job of selling it, for a lot of reasons. But what I don't understand is, however you feel, throwing aside the principles that make this America, throwing over - to me - some of its most basic values. And supporting to a man who has no sense of honor and no code and no compunctions of any kind, you know? Being willing to do all of those things. I guess I had thought there was more importance placed on those things than there really is.

Like freedom of speech?

And supporting to a man who has no sense of honor and no code and no compunctions of any kind, you know?

Obviously I don't believe that, or I wouldn't support him. But again, no point debating. People who dislike Trump barely see him as human.

I guess I had thought there was more importance placed on those things than there really is.

Many of us who considered ourselves progressive and voted for Obama twice are appalled and disgusted by the importance the left has placed on some of those values over others.

Don't make the mistake of thinking Trump's popularity comes exclusively from the right or the alt-right. They alone couldn't have gotten him this far. I'm convinced a lot of liberals are voting for him and lying about it. You guys are in for a shock in November. Get your bags packed and your passports ready.

Like freedom of speech?

Trump wants to sue the press for opinion pieces: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/02/26/donald-trump-vows-to-open-up-libel-laws-to-make-suing-the-media-easier-heres-how-he-could-do-it/

Er...yes they could, and have? We haven't had the general yet. Trump's accomplishment so far is winning the presumptive Republican nomination through the primary/caucus process, which doesn't require input from anybody except conservatives. Or do you think right-wingers are helping to propel Bernie farther than many thought he would go?

This. I was going to say, we haven't even gotten two definite nominees yet. This is strictly by party at the moment.

Methinks AYRT needs a high school civics refresher course in how the US election process works (like so many other Trump supporters I've seen).

Methinks you need a refresher in how primaries work. In many states, they are open to voters from parties.

Democrats can vote in Republican primaries in many states. We did.

Not that many. There are only 11 states with open primaries.

I don't want to write a whole thing on free speech because it's 8 in the fucking morning and I haven't had any coffee yet, but I think there's something to be said for the idea that making it easier to sue newspapers for libel for reporting stories you don't like is a bigger threat to free speech than protestors are.

On Trump, I do see him as human. But there's a wide range of behavior for human beings, and I don't see him as someone with a real moral code or with the kind of substance or honor that the presidency demands. More to the point, those are the same terms in which you yourself praised him: he's someone who doesn't give a fuck about anything. I think that is bad. "Is factually a human being" is, if you think about it, literally the lowest bar for a presidential candidate to pass.

+1000 to all of this.

Re: Trump Again

Yeah, you're right. He's evil, and I'm evil for supporting him. And progressives are saints who pose zero threat to liberalism. Cheers.

it's always good to have someone who "doesn't give a fuck" in a position of diplomacy with other countries. can't wait for the 600 wars he starts because someone said they disliked his hair or insulted his small, doll-like hands.

So I take it if he does start 600 wars, you'll be first in line to enlist and fight them for him, right?

Re: Trump Again

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-06-03 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, no. Trump's completely lack of tact and respect for others is going to be a diplomatic disaster. I don't think it's actually about his hair or his hands, but it's about his inability to be truly empathetic to others or even really pretend to. He's blatantly narcissistic and yes, I am concerned that making him the face of American foreign policy could cost lives.

Sometimes there's fearmongering, and sometimes there's stating reasonable concerns.

Why the hell would you want someone who "doesn't give a fuck" to be in charge of your country? I understand not wanting to take on more responsibility as a citizen but then it would be in your best interest to choose leaders who care maybe a little more than average, so you can have the luxury of letting it be "somebody else's problem".

Honestly, I think the biggest problem with American politics is how little responsibility your average citizen is willing to take for our leadership.
