i love the games a lot, and maybe that's partly why i'm critical of that, because the series has gotten better about representations of women and other things as it's gone on, and i wish that they had done the same with poc or lgbtq+ characters. i hate having to do the 'well the series is great but it's pretty white and there's like no lgbtq+ characters that aren't evil and there's a lot of excessive titties' whenever i rec the series. i haven't finished hearts of stone and i haven't played blood and wine yet though, so i can't comment on that.

I definitly wouldn't say I mind the complaint in general, I just really hate where it came from? I went into this a bit in my comments above, but the gist is that I think that lot of the people who say the game lacks represantation of people of color and just deals with boring white people do not get, that these boring white people are the only cultural representation of polish or eastern European people in mainstream gaming. They basically assume that representation only works on a racial level, when in fact for many people it does not. I for example don't really see myself or my culture in American characters even if they are white.
The games could have included more characters of color, and through that could have represented more people and I think that would have been a good thing (and I hope CD Project will try this on their next game. They improved so much on their female characters, I hope they can expand this to PoC). But what bothers me is the way most of the critics dismiss the actual represantation of the cultural backgrounds in this game as unimportant.
(As for awkward caveat while reccing the game, I totally get that, but I actually like how much they are improving. Like how for example how there were a couple of lgbt NPCs in sidequests and how you could play Ciri as gay. And Philippa probably counts as evil, but I love her either way.)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 11:38 am (UTC)(link)Storytelling should be organic. That list tends to create some really bad cardboard cutout characters that are worse than no representation at all.
Also? Not everything needs to be a perfect example of representation. This is coming from a non-white, non-straight, non-gender conforming person. Do I want more stories and games about people I can identify with? Absolutely! Do I want them shoved into the background shots of games so that the developers can say they have a diverse cast? No. I've seen that too much.
Let the Witcher be the Witcher and let's talk about making more games featuring POC, LGBT people, non-European based fantasy settings, etc.

I kinda hope that this reaction you are describing is mostly a knee-jerk reaction to the things I criticized, but then some people are that racist.
