Writing question - does this happen to anyone else?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm constantly having ideas for things I want to write, and I know the characters I want to write, but I can never come up with names for them. Usually I want to use names I like, but they never seem right for the character, or there's too strong an association with an already existing character in some book/TV show/movie so it feels weird using it.

Grrr.

It varies a lot for me. Often I'll write with placeholder names until I figure out something that feels right, other times I end up switching names between characters. Then I'll have some moments like I've recently had happen where a name just pops up and it feels perfect from the get-go (In my most recent case a girl named Éloïse, who is very adamant that you have to write her name properly). I've had felt the overused or too strong association thing too, but usually ignore it if it feels right for the character.

Not really. Would you like some naming help?

Dude this site is so cool:

http://fantasynamegenerators.com/#realNames

It'll generate male or female names from different countries/cultures as well as fantasy names, place names, a ton of fun stuff.

Name everyone Steve. Then give them nicknames. "Tall Steve," "Redhead Steve," "Hunchback Steve," "Tiny Steve," "Steve the Model," "Girl Steve #3," etc.

Yesss. It happens to me all the time. It's a pain in the bum because you have this character, you have the story but you can't think of a friggin name for them. Sometimes I go to baby names sites to look for name but always come back empty handed. "orz

I just go to a random name generator and take the first thing to pop up unless I have a very strong reason not to. I think of it as a stand-in name until I find the perfect one, but it usually winds up growing on me and it becomes their name.

God yes, naming is the worst.

I am late to this party, but I love the Character Naming Sourcebook. You can pick up a used copy on abebooks.com for under $4, shipped. It's not the be-all/end-all, but it's incredibly useful. It gives names by country and a few other criteria, and also their meanings.
