Funny thing about adaptations, some things can change!

So how will they handle detta hating Roland because he's white?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering the same. It was a major shift in her development and an important aspect of their relationship.

You will have to ask the writers. I'm not good at creative writing.

Maybe Detta will hate him now because he's an Uncle Tom. And they will move the race hate part of the equation to her hating Eddie.

To be honest, Detta hated everyone equally, she was ALL the negativity possible, so I don't see how this can change things THAT much.

You're definitely remembering that character differently than I am...this is a major change to the storyline

Probably by having her leave out "honky" while still calling him a motherfucker? Honkies across the nation will heave a sigh of relief.

... and Jesus wasn't white. Do you sent snitty letters to publishers of holy cards and collectible Christian plates?

If you're familiar with the character Susanna, making Roland black really changes their relationship.

Well, I have to admit I am not; I stopped reading King after "It."

Apologies for my uninformed snark.

I think I'm familiar, but I don't think the racial component even counts for much, and I don't think it's necessary at all for the movie screen. The experience of being black in a world that's moved on is going to be different from being black in America anyway anyway. And Detta can still be afraid he's going to rape her or that he can see right through her persona.
