Re: ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA Dynamics in Fanfic

Agreed. And I find it a bit depressing because when I first encountered it I thought how much I would hate being an "omega" and then realized being female, I basically am one in real life. And while I don't mind being female, I would hate being in that role.

Nah, tho. If at some point women actually start losing their minds and going into heat or whatever and screwing any/all random "alphas" in the vicinity, then I think we have a real problem on our hands.

As it stands, I know I'm not the only guy out there who prefers a more take-charge attitude in female partners. Live your dream! :)

I'm the opposite - I have a pretty dominant personality and do NOT like the idea of being submissive (at least not unless it's in a switch dynamic with someone I REALLY liked and trusted, i.e. probably nobody except whoever I end up marrying, because I am extremely picky and extremely monogamous). And I hate the implication that omega = female and therefore being able to get pregnant = sexually submissive. :(

That's pretty much what I meant, though! The idea of your biology determining your sex role bugged me because I'm female and dislike being submissive, and I noticed that the "omegas" are often supposed to have "female" traits, like being able to get pregnant. Maybe I worded it badly in the original comment.

No, actually. Equating omega with female is pretty much missing the entire point of a/b/o. How do you even get there? The omega is not a stand-in for a female character, because of girl-cooties or whatever. The appeal, at least for me, is that a great deal of works of that trope is focussed on submissive MEN who are really into being penetrated. And that is something I enjoy tremendously, especially outside of any BDSM context.

that's great for you (honestly) but I think it's really naive to pretend that gender parallels aren't there at all.

That's not really what I meant. It's not that I don't see that usually being penetrated, being submissive etc. would be seen as a 'female trait', and yuck to all that. I'm just rolling my eyes about the general assumption that this is what the trope is all about, because that's what it is: an assumption that is based on a squicky feeling and not actual 'evidence'. I'm not saying that this evidence doesn't exist, it could, definitely possible. But if one assumes while reading m/m ABO that the male omega must be a stand-in for a female character because they're usually penetrated/submissive/etc., that's not challenging rigid gender stereotypes, it's reproducing them.

I don't know. Maybe you're right, and I am being naive (no sarcasm), but I don't like going through the world assuming that everyone else must be less complex, clever, analytical etc. than I am.

I'll agree to disagree on this one. The gender dynamics are part of the reason I don't like the trope. I did a little research; apparently women (when they're in the stories at all) usually aren't alphas and when they are they have dicks. I mean it's the whole "penetrator = dominant, penetratee = submissive" idea and while that's not identical to the issue of rigid gender sexual roles there's some major overlap.
