It really is unfortunate. Because I think you can break Ron and Hermione up - and even acknowledge that he's not very nice to people who aren't in his inner circle - without making him a hateful Nice Guy douchebag. In that sense, I really wish the rest of the story wasn't so interesting.

I love Ron/Hermione, but yeah, you don't have to write that ship and you can still write Ron IC. (Just like with...any ship, basically, and any character. And I'm not the kind of person who refuses to read fic outside of my personal shipping preferences.)
