Mary's not blameless (OTOH she's so stereotypical it's hard to take her character seriously), but Carla's a jackass of the highest magnitude. The difference is Willis can't see the latter's attitude being a problem because she's trans and as we know, it gives her the right to be an asshole and she can't do anything wrong, Ever.

Also Ruth is an ass too so I don't have much sympathy for her. There are really no well-written characters in this comic.

According to his tumblr page, his point was not that Carla wasn't an ass, but that even being an ass didn't make Mary justified.
