I never read the book but I watched a BBC version a lot when I was a kid and I absolutely loved it. (I think it might be partially responsible for my woobie-kink since everything goes wrong for her but it turns out right in the end.)

I don't think it's pathetic at all. Indeed, I think desiring for everything to be magically fixed or better is a very understandable and common desire. It's a little like waking up Christmas morning to see the presents magically appearing but with the added awesomeness that it could happen at any time.
