Re: YA Novels and Adults

Are those real rules signs or are they just there to shame adults who read YA because someone who works there thinks it's detrimental to their intelligence and wants to encourage them to read adult books only?

I'm an adult and about half of what I read is YA. The difference between YA and adult books isn't as big as people who don't read both think it is.

I assume they're rules because they've been there since I started going to that library some years ago.

They're not there to shame your delicate self. They're there so teens and children have a space where they can feel comfortable and safe.

You're one to talk about delicate, when you don't want anyone else to be allowed to look at YOOOUR books so you can have a "safe" space.

I haven't been a teenager for a couple of decades, but here's a tip for you: it's possible to sympathize with a group of people even if you aren't one of them.

I actually agree the rule was laid down in a ham-fisted way. But seeing it as a personal slight toward you by people determined to "shame" and "judge" you for liking YA lit--that's oversensitive and precious. Teens are routinely treated as nuisances and made unwelcome in public spaces, so it's pretty mean-spirited to grudge them a place of their own. If librarians have observed that teens make less use of a space when adults horn in on it, then for once the adults can back off. It's not as if there are no adults-only places.

I didn't say I'd be shamed by the sign. Actually I'd be able to ignore it. I look like a teen myself, so no delicate teens would be any the wiser to be uncomfortable with me existing in their space.

And besides, if the sign was there because they're worried about predators, why is the solution to the rule having a teen accompany the adult? That sounds like it would invite predators. "Hey, I'm an adult who totally LOOOOVES YA, for reals, but I can't get into this section by myself. Would one of you teens like to volunteer to stay super close to me the whole time while I browse? I'll make it up to you, I promise~"

I work in a library system with almost 40 different branches and have never seen this kind of thing; the closest we have is that only kids can use the internet computers in the children's area. I'd suspect they had an issue with one or more adults creeping on children or teens and want to make sure it doesn't happen again.
