I just wish flood insurance would come through because waiting (almost three months now) is enormously stressful, and I want construction on the house to be able to continue.

Also wish my mother was in better health, but at this point I don't believe that's going to change.

Oh, and space. I miss having space and lots of privacy.

Ugh is that still getting delayed? Insurance sucks man. You must be itching to have something started on your house so you can eventually get back in there, privacy is a wonderful thing.

And as always hugs and love to you over everything bb. ♥

Unfortunately yes, the insurance isn't happy with the adjusters proof of loss, so they have some questions and possible revisions. I'm afraid we'll get less money then what we originally signed for.

Having insurance is a good thing, but damn if it isn't a slow and incredibly frustrating process... I want to be through with it.

Construction had began, but it's stalled right now because we haven't received the money.

Man, that sucks balls. I don't blame you for getting stressed and frustrated with that, it sounds like so much hassle with not a huge amount of gain.

I just hope you can get enough of your house fixed.

If the insurance ends up paying what we originally signed for, I'll be satisfied. If they don't, well...I won't be.

Maybe things will work out. I have to keep telling myself that.

Did...you....you were in a flood?

Man I feel so super out of the loop.

Unfortunately, yes. (Er, in the sense that my house was flooded, but at least I wasn't in my house when it flooded; we did get out before things went to hell.) In March. I haven't talked about it much here because I haven't been around much; life has been crazy.

Wow, I can't say I blame you. I really hope you're doing alright. I had a friend IRL who lost his house to a flood last year. It's not fun.

Oh damn, that's devastating. :( I'm sorry for your friend, and hope he's making it alright. (Technically) We didn't lose our house, but everything inside is gutted and needs to be rebuilt. It's going to be a lot of time and money, but at least it was salvageable. I don't know what I'd have done if we lost the house completely; I'm stressed enough as is.

Thanks, though!

Man, good luck with that insurance wrangle. (Like do they want to make sure your house was REALLY, ACTUALLY fucked up by a flood? I hate dealing with insurance)

Re: Vent thread

[personal profile] elaminator 2016-06-10 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I submitted a shitload of pictures just to make sure they weren't going to question anything (because I was told by the adjuster they might even need pictures from before the flooding, as proof you owned your belongings), but they're questioning shit anyway. Don't think it's so much that they don't realize the house was fucked up, as they don't want to pay for everything that was actually fucked up, regardless of the fact we had more coverage than the amount the adjuster wants to give us. It'll probably work out...

Hopefully.

Man what is even the point of paying huge chunks of your income to insurance ugh

Well, you know where to come if you need to vent! xD

Surely for no reason at all!

Uh, it might work out eventually, but I admit I am a bit impatient. Three months is a long time to be out of your home. (At least it is to me.)

Haha, yes I do! I appreciate it. :)

I'm sorry you're going through that. Big hugs to you. <3

From my own post-fire experience: Insurance companies will do everything they can to not pay for things, unfortunately. It's how they keep their profits. Make sure you know your policy and entitlements and what the maximum time frames should be. Keep calling and asking for updates. Every single day if you have to.
If they aren't holding up their end of the deal, get copies of all your communication with them and your policy and send it straight to the ombudsmen (or equivalent body in your state I guess?).

I hope it gets sorted out for you soon and there are no more delays.

Re: Vent thread

Awww, thank you. <3

I really wish I've been keeping records of all the phone calls I've made. I've made so fucking many (just to insurance, not to mention contractors and such), but it never crossed my mind that I should have that shit written down. I'm new to all of this, and an idiot to boot.

Thankfully I know what our deadline was and got everything in by that date, but even though I upheld my end of the bargain (and the adjuster did as well), the insurance pushed the deadline back again. I'm sure they won't want to pay, so I just hope this doesn't end badly.

Having no experience with fires, I can only say that I'm awfully sorry you had to deal with that and I totally understand the destruction and pain that can occur when such an event happens to you. No one should have to go through insurance hell, but I'm glad you got out in one piece.

Re: Vent thread

[personal profile] belladonna_took 2016-06-09 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you're not an idiot! It's a very different experience than what you expect it to be, I think. Given that you pay for these people to help you and protect your financial security if something goes wrong, you don't really prepare for them to not want to help you and really drag their feet. It's especially bad because you're not in your own space and it's tough to stay on top of everything and be super organised when you're focusing on what you're doing right at that moment. You lose a bit of perspective sometimes to plan for things because the plan keeps changing all the time.

You're doing good! If you know what you're entitled to from them and when that should happen, even if they give you problems you have an advantage because you can start making complaints (keep copies of those too!) and reporting them to outside authorities right away. They rely on people being complacent when they want to delay something or argue that they're not required to do something.

Things were a bit different for me because the insurance company didn't want to deal with me directly. I was still in high school and the only other person on the policy was a sort of family member who didn't want to share any money with me so we only had contact for some of the time. So yeah. Insurance really didn't get me out of that mess. About 2 years after the fire I got enough money to buy a mattress and some new work shoes because the ombudsmen's office threatened the insurance company. At the time I was still without a permanent address.

I'm sure your experience will be different though. I hope things get moving in a good direction soon and you start to see some results.

Re: Vent thread

[personal profile] elaminator 2016-06-09 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've always believed that insurance companies secretly didn't want to pay, but when push comes to shove I believed they would. They certainly have the money; it shouldn't be a problem for them to give us what we're entitled to.

Haha, well... We'll see.

It is very difficult to keep track of things, and I say this as someone who likes keeping things in a certain order; I've been misplacing shit left and right. Being out of your element really shifts your worldview, which probably only makes the whole experience that much easier for insurance to wiggle out of.

If I could turn back time, I would have immaculate records! As is, I'll just have to be a pain in the ass, and maybe that will get me somewhere.

:/ But I'm sorry that you couldn't even deal with insurance directly; that would be a thousand times worse then having to deal with them. At least I have some control over the situation; in your place you had to rely on others to help you, and they didn't do their job. I'm glad it sounds like you're in a better place now, but man. Grrr.

Hopefully nothing like that will ever happen to either of us again. (But just in case, it's a learning experience.)

Thanks again! ♥
