It's not even about the white thing for me. It's about the Handsome Jack thing. I don't know if you've played Borderlands or not, but Jack is completely irredeemable and shipping him with Rhys makes me want to gag. People flipping out and frothing at the mouth about horrible evil monster abusers! Literally Satan! does a lot to further the insidious undermining of abuse victims' experience, though, since it makes it all the easier for people to decide their friends and loved ones can't be abusers, not being horrible caricatures and all.
