I think it's the eye shape, personally. If they have the squinty eyes then they're ~teh ebuls~, or going to be paired with a bad guy, or act bad. (Ash's Charizard, for instance)

If they don't have squinty eyes and are paired with a bad guy, there's the comedic effect thing.

agreed. they always say that Pokemon are just used for evil, not evil themselves and yet they still get "type-cast". have they ever done an episode defying those? it would write itself.

although now that I think about it, it would make for an interesting fanfic if some Pokemon were "listed" like dog breeds.

Ooh that does sound like an interesting fic.

I like the spearow line, sometimes I get annoyed the pidgey line gets so much attention in comparison.

Some Pokémon definitely deserve better treatment :(

Poison-types seem to be one of the commonly-stereotyped-as-bad types :(
Aside from a certain Croagunk, some Nidos, and iirc a Crobat maybe?, they tend to be near-exclusively used by villains :(
And I bet if (if) there was a poison-type Legendary (because Arceus doesn't count), that it'd be the antagonist in whichever movie they used it in. *sigh*

Spearow (and Fearow) used to be my flying-type of choice in Gen1, because it was so much easier to handle bugs with flying-type Peck than with normal-type Gust. :P
I apparently also have a fondness for some poison-types too ^_^
