I feel you so hard. I actually posted a secret years ago about wishing it weren't super weird for Ti Moune to be my dream role since I'm so pasty. Make it a class-based Little Mermaid retelling set in Appalachia and I'd be set...but it still wouldn't be Once On This Island. :(

And maybe some college theater directors. I heard about it in college when my roomate tried out for a part. We didn't get along. Anyway, that cake!

Hire an animator (or make friends with one), have them make an animatic (rough animation) of you singing your favorite song... Or have them fully animate it, idk what your financial situation is but if you have the cash, this could be doable. Then put it on youtube. If ATLA can get credit for having diverse characters but still lots of white people in the main voice cast, that proves anybody else can pull off something similar.

Once on This Island. It's charming, although not my favorite Ahrens and Flaherty show. I saw a nice production of it starring Ledisi some years back.
