I she really a-spectrum or just written inexplicably stupid as needed for plot?

At least in the first few seasons, autism is never mentioned. She's highly intelligent but incredibly socially awkward... until the plot needs her to be great at people skills, and then suddenly she is! Until the next episode, when it's back to being a proto-Sheldon Cooper.

She always has difficulty with people. Any skill she has is through rote application of her anthropological studies.

Last I remember, the "explanation" was an overly logic-based and unemotional worldview as a coping mechanism for parental abandonment and growing up foster care. But that was before she devolved into a literal robot who's never heard of a figure of speech or interacted with human beings before. I think they pretty much stopped examining her ridiculous "characterisation" right around the time that happened.

Does it actually matter if she is canonically "on the spectrum"? People who headcanon her as autistic will get butthurt about the criticsm of their precious autistic cinnamon roll either way.

I headcanon her as autistic and I think she's an asshole on top of it.

I'm finding it funny that people are listing all these negative traits she has because that's literally my list of why I like her. She ISN'T perfect. She's a jerk and lacks empathy and has no insight (remember when she claimed that the autistic kid wouldn't care about his video game record being stolen, despite honestly showing more diagnostic criteria than most confirmed autistic characters do?) and has a massive superiority complex and bosses everyone around...

Come on, we all have trash faves.
