Oh yes, Kino's Journey is one of my favorite anime! I tend to forget that it's a light novel anime because last I checked there wasn't much of the novels translated and I didn't want to get into them only partway.

I liked Fate/zero too. It has some misogyny issues and edginess as expected from the Butcher, but it was cool and raised some interesting questions.

The recent stuff, though! The Baccano anime came out nearly 10 years ago. And I have no idea what happened to the plot of the novels later, if it kept on being good or just got messy and repetitive.
You have to admit that a lot of the worst shows recently are based on light novels, though. Fucking SAO, for example, that basically epitomizes the light novel style we're seeing lately.
And btw, if you want an even better example - The Twelve Kingdoms is a light novel series, and those are freaking amazing.

No worries, I understand where you're coming from. The crappy moe light novels with really long titles have been getting a lot more prevalent. :P Just wanted to offer a counterargument. And I don't know Twelve Kingdoms, but I'll check it out!

TWELVE KINGDOMS PRAISE INCOMING
Okay so idk if you want to try the novels or the anime - I've only watched the anime, but I recently got the novels (in Japanese) and they're waiting at home for me for when I get back from Korea.
So it starts off, and you think you've seen this story before. But 12K just does it amazingly, the character development is beautiful, and it's one of the anime with the best female characters I've seen. And from the first arc, it just keeps getting better. (and if at the beginning you dislike Youko - SO MUCH CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT).
The world is also pretty cool and well-done.
