Hmmmmmm, good question. I don't know, maybe it's just me. "Smart" isn't generally a word I use to describe entertainment that I like. I'm more likely to use the word "clever," which doesn't have precisely the same meaning.

As for "mature," it's hard for me to associate "mature" with a show about teenagers, no matter how good it is.

So in that sense Baccano would be an exception. I haven't seen too many anime series about adults.

What about Princess Jellyfish? They're all college age, at least.

But they were pretty sheltered/naive, which comes across as child-like.
