I should probably have added a "lately" or "in the last couple years" because that's really more what I'm complaining about: trying to get into new anime

And yeah yeah im sure there's still some great anime out there but it's a massive slog trying to find it

DA, but I mean...everything's a massive slog to find anything good, honestly. There's so much mass-produced garbage in every genre of every type of entertainment that you always have to dig for the gems that are definitely there. Anime's no exception to that rule, but it's in no way unique in that problem.

Yeah but in any other genre I can find people who share my taste that I trust. In anime it feels like 100% of anime fans are put here apologizing for terrible shit.

Pretty sure that's just confirmation bias talking. You're totally allowed to feel that way, don't get me wrong, but there's definitely lots of good anime out there, too-- and lots of sane fans of good things.

Unless you're talking about the "this is TRASH" and "anime was a mistake" sort of memes? Because that's really tongue-in-cheek; no one actually means it literally, haha.
