I use it as shorthand, just like i use Xmas. It's a habit and, like i've said, one i've used for years, even here on this comm.

I've never heard of it being anything about Asians or the city/name/etc. in China. You are literally the first person who has *ever* brought that up.

Ah, yes, yet another neglected apostrophe. Illiteracy is alive and well on the internet, who knew!

Xi'an is the city in question. Xian (Greek origins) has been used by the Christian Church for centuries.

lol I've never seen a Christian use "Xian"

(not that I find it super offensive - a little annoying, but not the end of the world. but I've definitely only seen it used by non-Christians. not saying you are wrong but I'm surprised to see that claim.)

No offence taken, I'm just geeky about (amongst other things) language and am very protective of neglected and abused apostrophes. *g*

Here are a few links, purely for the hell of it, tho the first one may be of use to any budding genealogists reading this:

www(.)genealogy-specialists.com/threads/when-is-an-x-not-an-x.4901/
wikipedia(.)org/wiki/Christogram
wikipedia(.)org/wiki/Xian_(abbreviation) (in the Oxford English Dictionary!)
and the diary mentioned in the above link, where the X=Christ abbreviation was used regularly, was written by this clergyman, who was the son of a clergyman:-
geni(.)com/people/Samuel-Rogers/6000000006444287566

Links were mutilated cos I wasn't not sure if dw would eat them if I didn't.

And yes, I'm aware none of these are partic modern usages, but they're still valid usages.

*backs slowly away from google*

Huh, I guess that's why I've never heard it from a Christian, but I guess it does have historical roots. Thanks! (the more you know)

You're really calling me illiterate because I transliterated it without an apostrophe, when many Westerners writing about it do? You choose to be pedantic about that, but not about using the word "illiteracy" wrong?

Since you like links, have the Wikipedia entry on Xian (Taoism), an article on a Chinese woman named Xian, and the Travel China Guide article on Xian.

different anon here... who speas chinese. and there's a huge difference between "Xian" (pronouced like shyan) and Xi'an (pronounced like shee-ahn). Both exist in chinese though but how the hell you would jump to that in this discussion is completely beyond my comprehension.

Because both are transliterated as Xian quite frequently, aka the spelled word that the person I replied to was using? IDK why you think that's a weird connection to make.

"That person said "curtain"! How on Earth did you start talking about "curtain"?!"
