Except you can put as much money as you want into a PC because you can build one from separate parts depending on how high end or how powerful you need/want it.

Yeah, if you have the money to do that. That still requires money and is less cheap than just buying a basic comp especially if mobility is a really big issue.

Is it not possible to buy a basic PC? Isn't that the whole point, that it can be as basic or as loaded as you need or want it?

You can get a basic PC for $300 or so, yeah.

Ok, but if it has to be a laptop, that won't work.

And generally if you want to be able to play a lot of games you're gonna want to go for something a little more than the basic model.

Which might preclude also buying a Mac if you need one of those. And in fact, $300 is a fair amount of money to a lot of people, including people who are able to save up for computers but don't necessarily have a few hundred bucks lying around to buy another one.
