Unless they can only afford one or the other?

+1

despite what gamers would have you believe, a computer that works for you and your needs is more important then something that you can play video games on - and yes, sometimes those categories overlap, but not always

(also you don't know how old the mac is? maybe OP could afford the mac when they got it but has less money now)

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-06-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But then why get a Mac? At least you can customize a PC so it can suit your needs and wants.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I use it cause I am in design school and they are considered standard here but also: who cares what computers other people use? If someone learned on macs instead of PCs they will like Macs better and be able to understand their controls better, and vice versa

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-06-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
If you game, you're still better off getting a PC, even if you go against industry standard, considering how customizable a PC is (even hardware wise, you're probably going to find a monitor that is of comparable quality to a Mac's) and how most programs are going to have a Window's version anyway.

But you say this as if you don't play PC games or as if a computer can be used for more than one thing.

Welll, Mac has been historically good for some graphic programs and things like video editing. so, if that's specifically what they need a computer for...I sort of get it.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-06-13 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Historically yes, but Adobe (the only company that makes industry standard software I know of for graphics) makes versions for both PC and Mac.

Good argument for getting a PC instead, really.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
serious question: what is the advantage of a mac over a pc? like, are there things that macs do better? because all i ever hear is how this and that program won't run properly on a mac so I honestly can't understand why anyone would want one, especially considering how expensive they are and how you can't customize them.

They have much better virus protection* and generally run a lot of creative software. It's sort of more of a niche item. Some people also prefer the aesthetic.

*This is an advantage of some, but not an enormous amount, of value. People can be duped into thinking their Macs are completely invulnerable, so they take no precaution and get blindsided by something awful.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-06-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't have better virus protection, it's that no one really makes viruses for them because of how small the userbase is. Less viruses is not better protection.

but what creative software can they run that a pc can't? i know adobe makes all of their stuff for pc and those are pretty much the industry standard when it comes for things like design afaik.

except that more viruses are being made for macs because macs are trendy these days

They can carry viruses and you can infect another computer while moving files from an infected Mac to that computer. The Mac seems fine because the viruses aren't written to affect it's OS, but they're still lurking in there, waiting to be dumped onto your friend's PC.

Personally, I just find their interface a lot easier to use.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
cygwin blows, not sure how the new ubuntu layer under MSWin is these days.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Trendy and more expensive, which will always mean "better" in some peoples' view.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
They work. You plug them in and they work. Almost all of the "Well, we don't know why that crashed" "Oooh, yeah, looks like you need to install several more components for that to work" "I think the components you installed are conflicting with the software that worked fine yesterday" problems just DON'T HAPPEN.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You serious? My boyfriend has done nothing but complain about the problems his mac has, problems he never had on PC.

+2 mte

like come on, there's a middle ground between "bargain buying everything you own" and "completely loaded"

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-06-13 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Except you can put as much money as you want into a PC because you can build one from separate parts depending on how high end or how powerful you need/want it.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-06-14 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if you have the money to do that. That still requires money and is less cheap than just buying a basic comp especially if mobility is a really big issue.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-14 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Is it not possible to buy a basic PC? Isn't that the whole point, that it can be as basic or as loaded as you need or want it?
