Personally I use it cause I am in design school and they are considered standard here but also: who cares what computers other people use? If someone learned on macs instead of PCs they will like Macs better and be able to understand their controls better, and vice versa

If you game, you're still better off getting a PC, even if you go against industry standard, considering how customizable a PC is (even hardware wise, you're probably going to find a monitor that is of comparable quality to a Mac's) and how most programs are going to have a Window's version anyway.

But you say this as if you don't play PC games or as if a computer can be used for more than one thing.

Ok, but if your career seriously benefits from having a Mac, you have to decide whether the career benefits or the games are the most important.

There are programs you can only run on a Mac.

Moreover, there are a lot of design firms that use Macs, regardless of whether or not they're actually superior for design. So if you work for one of them and are inclined to use your home computer for work on occasion, or if you're just using your work computer because you can't afford a home PC, you're going to be using a Mac.

If you're the same anon, go back and read what I wrote. You might find a caveat that addresses programs that says something along the lines of not seeing how a Mac is more advantageous over a PC unless you use programs that are only for Macs.

You know you can format external hard drives to run on both, right? And for smaller files, thumb drives don't even need formatting (ignoring the possibility you're not allowed either, but in that case, you're probably not taking work home and only working on it at work and thus what you use at home wouldn't matter).

That doesn't address the software needs. As AYRT clearly stated, there are design programs (and CGI programs!) that work better or solely on Macs. It doesn't matter how customisable your rig is and how much you've spent optimising it for *games*, someone working in design has other needs to be met.

Macs have been standard in publishing for decades. I like Windows, but Microsoft was playing catchup to the Mac for twenty years, and I don't think they ever caught Apple when it comes to desktop publishing or filmmaking.

In either of those cases, there's software for both and probably does come to preference and if you like to game on your computer or what you can afford.

Oh man, you were doing so well answering me without being a dick. You were so close. But no, honey, I don't really game unless it's on a handheld, and even then, not so much.

It's true that Macs have been the preferred choice for publishing for a long time. On the flipside, PCs has been the preferred standardized format for games and almost every other program aside from publishing. So OP can be disappointed but not surprised that there are less options with a Mac.

That may have been true in the past, but it's no longer the case today, IME. I'm the web design student from below and we don't even have any Macs in our tech labs - all of the computers we use are PCs.
