live musicals/plays/operas that make you cry

Because I sat in the theater sniffing because of a pineapple. Cabaret gets to me very f*cking time...

I sobbed during both renditions of The Circle of Life during The Lion King in Broadway. Full on, slightly hysterical sobs. And then I teared up during many other parts of the play.

thank you for mentioning that! I bought the CD but haven't listened to it yet

(of course, I blame Code Black for reminding me that there was a Broadway production!)

I didn't cry at The Circle of Life in the theatre but I damn near did, I was not expecting to be as moved by that as I was.

All of them with sad parts, because I'm a fucking faucet. Most recent was Hamilton, even though It's Quiet Uptown isn't even a good song.

I cried HARD during The Lion King and Hamilton, and definitely teared up during Wicked. And there you have the sum total of my live Broadway musical experiences, lol

The chorus I'm in just sang jesus christ superstar, and man. The woman we had for Mary Magdalene!! For some reason I just cried EVERY single time at "I Don't Know How to Love Him." She just had this really sad, sweet voice, and the way the orchestra would swell and she sung out and it just made me soo emotional haha.

Also I'm a huge goober and will cry literally every time at the curtain call. It doesn't matter if I'm in the show or just the audience, I just get so emotional! Like I can feel all the emotion coming from the cast and crew and it really gets to me.

I love Jesus Christ Superstar!

I'm usually a mess by Gethsemane

Oh man, Gethsemane gets me bad! And then everyone singing Could We Start Again Please, just so many emotions. The entire show has been stuck in my head so much lately.

I don't know how to love him is amazing! And there are particular times when Judas' lines in the song
"Jesus Christ Superstar" (and probably another song) really get me.

since you've mentioned opera, oof, so many of my faves are the tragedies..

to give a few examples:
Rigoletto's aria to the nobles that had kidnapped his daughter, not knowing she was his daughter. (actually, that whole scene gets me in the worst way)
"Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate" from Nabucco
Madama Butterfly's death aria. (Fuck Pinkerton and the little horse he rode in on)
Mimi's death aria in La Boheme (and unlike Rent, she does not have a miraculous recovery)
"Ai nostri monti ritorneremo" from Il trovatore (ugh, by this point, the opera has ripped your heart to shreds because everyone has hit the woobie status hard)
"Gran Dio!...morir sì giovane" from La traviata (she's been reunited with her true love ..oh, wait, she's dead)
"Vesti la giubba" from Pagliacci (because what comes after hits you with a sledgehammer right in your heart)

For musicals:
Final Storm and Disappear - Secret Garden
can I just list the entire end of Man of La Mancha?

seconding those operas I was actually sobbing during some of them. It was embarrassing

opera anon:

Oh, I hear you big time.
And I forgot two arias - "E lucevan le stelle" and "Vissi d'arte". Tosca, you've killed my heart at this point.
And there's a really good animated video of "E lucevan"

Wow that was beautiful, disturbing but beautiful

Operas are really great, I started to listen (and appreciate) them, like, two years ago and it's been great, plus I get really happy everytime I recognize some famous arias and melodies

Opera anon:
I know! I had randomly caught the video on a classic arts channel and fell in love with it. There's a cute one for Traviata but I blank on the aria's name.

I know there's an aria in Lucia Di lammamor that is heartbreaking. It's right after Lucia's wedding. (Forgetting the soprano's name at the moment, but there's a production where you honestly think the singer has snapped)

Thanks for the tip i will look it up!!!

Do you have favorite composer or opera you think is essential to know or just something you like?

Opera anon:

Partial to Verdi and Puccini. Wagner is good but heavy.

For Verdi, I recommend Aida, Rigoletto, Trovatore, Traviata. For Puccini, Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Turnadot.

Others I suggest are Cav/Pag (they're two acts each and usually paired together. Cav is the opera they use in Godfather 3), Barber of Seville.

Those are a few I've seen and enjoyed.

Ah, found the soprano in question for that Lucia scene I mentioned above:
Gianna Rolandi. The vid on youtube is broken into three parts (same user has all three so you should be good)
Here's part 1 of 3:
