The Great Mouse Detective was a fun movie and all, but no. Basil was much more of a jerk to both his "Watson" and the girl. Holmes had his less than stellar moments, but generally he wasn't that selfish or arrogant. Of all the adpatations in the secret, Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes was closest to the book Holmes.

This. And don't take my word for it, Jean Conan Doyle (daughter of ACD) thought so too.
