Sorry OP but Basil kicks all their butts. He was the one closest to book!Sherlock and I lover his movies.

Nope. Close but no cigar. Also spoiled by DIRE Watson (writers' fault, not actor's)which made his Holmes more like a man with a dog than a friend.

The Great Mouse Detective was a fun movie and all, but no. Basil was much more of a jerk to both his "Watson" and the girl. Holmes had his less than stellar moments, but generally he wasn't that selfish or arrogant. Of all the adpatations in the secret, Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes was closest to the book Holmes.

This. And don't take my word for it, Jean Conan Doyle (daughter of ACD) thought so too.

Basil had a lot of the superficial trapping of what people think of when they think of Sherlock Holmes, i.e. the wardrobe and superior attitude. But that's hardly the extent of book!Sherlock's character. ACD Holmes wouldn't have turned away a child, and a small female one at that. He would also never fall into a self-pitying funk in the middle of a case. Between cases because he's bored? Absolutely. But during a case that isn't even close to being resolved? Absolutely not.

You have to look beyond the surface and the deerstalker. Basil is inspired by Sherlock Holmes, but he definitely isn't the closest to book!Holmes among the adaptations in question. Even Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock comes closer, and that's saying a lot.
